@sig Still have a couple spots left to fill.  But I think with this roster, its reasonable to expect a solid, non bubble, NCAA tournament team.  Some things that could push it to a surprise B10 contender, deep NCAA run, etc... caliber team... 1)Great chemistry.  This is probably the most important unknown, at this point.  How the team buys in, meshes, etc...will determine a lot.  This is CDD's job.  I think he did a mediocre job of this in year 1.  Hopefully that was more the mix of guys, than his own coaching abilities on it.  2)One or two guys outside the current portal signees, stepping up and being either a starter or major contributor.  The portal guys are exciting, but its pretty rare that ALL of them will "hit", and be really good and impactful.  So Sisley, Moody, any of the last few signees... the more of them that step up and break their way in to the regular rotation, the better.  At a minimum, it makes us much more deep.  And practically, it helps limit the "damage" of any of the portal guys not living up to expectations.  We all lived through watching multiple guys not living up to their hype, this past year.  It'll happen again, need some other guys to out perform expectations on the flip side of that.  Obviously it limits the damage of key injuries too.

So... decent chemistry, and an unexpected emergence or two, or just late signees of impact guys... and this team can be really good.

you're firing in all cylinders. Rounding out the roster is key. For depth purpose. If done correctly a big plus. And most importantly he needs to build chemistry... something he was unable to do last year.  Which to me is a red flag.  That said if he's able to do that this team should be in the tournament comfortably and could definitely make it to the 2nd weekend.

@hoosiers94 making the sweet 16 the barometer for success is tough IMO.  So much shit can happen.  If they lose a tough game against the 3/4/5 seed I’m not gonna say failed season.  They should be a top 6 seed though. That needs to be the floor.  No excuse not to do that.  Then he should be a top 6 seed for the next few years.  Need to be consistent and ranked.  Sweet 16s and further will come when you are always a top 6 seed.  Mix in some 1-3 seeds and we can say we are back.  Long way to go for that to happen but he’s gotta be a top 6 seed next year to start.

he doesn't have the equity to lose a game like that. Imo.  Imagine if Crean had beaten Syracuse.  I get what you're saying. RMK lost several times in the tourney before he should have... but we could all live with it due to his successes ... barring a boat load of injuries to key players...and who defines key ..,  that's about the only way I could excuse it personally.  But that's just me. :).

Man, got to give IU credit.  Maybe actually got to give the donors the credit….. we spent a boat load or a yacht load I should say on this transfer portal.  Sherrell took the biggest pay day, and IU did it.  For sure around 4 mil maybe more…. BUrton would have went to Houston if they matched what IU paid him.  They spent the cash and these are legit players.

turkish tower is front runner for my favorite player.  Looks like he has a personality, no Bailey that’s for sure.

come on IU you have sucked me back in, be freaking decent for once.  Don’t have to be great but a top 4 finish and a top 6 seed? Just be top 25 and ranked. You know relevant for once.  COACH DD!!!

[/quoteIf IU can avoid the injury bug to its key players and DeVries can coach these guys up my expectations are a top 25 team as well. Perhaps we might get surprised with the player additions that are to come. The frontcourt could use more depth with another big man or two.

@hoosiers94 Definitely a very big question mark.  Psychologically... he might have a little better chance to get this groups full buy in, undivided attention, etc... because all of them have more than 1 year left of college ball, and really none of them are likely early NBA departures... so, whether at IU, or not, they're all "playing for contracts".  This past years team, most of the main contributors were done with college ball, and none were likely NBA guys, and I'm sure they all knew it.

I was NOT impressed with how this past years team progressed, with how inconsistent they were in various things, essentially from day 1.  If that ends up being a systemic issue with CDD coached teams, that will show itself again, and I think its more than possible this will be his last year.  If what I throw out above, and/or just the players mindsets are different, and/or CDD is actually usually good at getting buy in, coaching consistency, etc... then we should have a much better year, and the program should be headed in a much better direction.

In a game with millions of keys, this is the most central, biggest one, for IU basketball, right now... in my opinion.

@iunorth I tend to agree, but DD isn't getting canned ... even if the coming season is a repeat of this season. If Dolson pulled the plug after Year 2, he'd be indicting himself.

indicting himself OR, showing he cares about bb being good again. Look, unless you hire a home run, coaching hires are a crap shoot. No shame in admitting a hire didnt work out - happens all the time, we just focus on the ones that do work - May for example.

I still think and hope that Josh Schertz is the IU coach someday -I think he would get the program where it was and needs to be. I hope DD can do this, but, like others, I have doubts until it happens. This recruiting cycle has shown he can recruit  - I do think he can coach, so we will see how this unfolds.

@iugradman anything can happen in the tourney. But they should be favored to go to the sweet 16 is what I want to see.  No freaking bubble.

Thats where I'm at. If we're a top 4 seed and get upset in the 2nd round its not like he's getting fired nor should he. The key will be repeating that.  Getting upset and then dropping back to the bubble in year 3 would be Woodson territory and cause for firing.

this kind of money and talent s16 should be the floor.  He had his mulligan already

I noticed the guys on Btown Banners are already pumping the brakes a bit after being ready to hang banner number 6 last week. Now some are saying the round of 32 and a 6 seed is going to be great progress.

Doorknob has enough resources to where making the Sweet Sixteen should be a minimum expectation. Dusty’s success should be the standard.

BTown Banners is full of delusional idiots who do nothing but make excuses for the lack of winning.

I think he has to be ranked in the top 25 at the end of the year.  I hate making the tourney a barometer for if someone is a good coach in a singular year.  Over ten years the average depth you go in the tourney, sure.  But one year....  If he isn't in the top 25 though he should be fired.  No reason for that.  After his piss poor first year, he has to do that.

Got to give him or whoever made him actually get real players this year some credit though.  I obviously have beat this drum to death but getting Conor and Bailey as players you thought were starters was one of the dumbest things any coach could have ever done.  I knew from the first game they were atrocious.  And frankly a tweaner at DePaul? Like again still baffled that scrub was picked (And some of you backed him!!!) as a main guard for a team...

I think we are in a win win situation now.  If he doesn't do good we will fire him next year, and if he does do good, well, giddeup.
