If Iowa is #47 and we are #51, that's based on his modeling of coaching. Don't know if he factors that in, haven't read about his methods. But how else do you get that result? Because on paper, we have the stronger roster.

He's uses the team off/def efficiencies from the previous year as his coaching adjustment unless it's a new coach then he either increases the randomness giving the rating a lower floor but higher ceiling or if it's a brand new coach then the talent portion of the formula is carrying a majority of the weight.

@dbmhoosier Around a 9th place finish is my +/- measure for progress this year.  Its NOT the standard, so if we do finish 9th, and crawl in the NCAAs, I'm not going to be doing any backflips.  But it would be a sign of progress, especially if we finish well, and look good in March.  And then, if we could return the best 5-6 guys that contribute to that season, bring Branham and Wabbington in, and a couple impactful transfers... things would be looking up.

9th would be a massive disappointment. We have as much talent as anyone outside maybe the top 3 teams.  We also have the easiest schedule.  When I asked AI to predict the conference finishes it actually had us finishing #1 (due to our favorable schedule).  Not saying that should happen but we should finish at least top 5.

Go break down our entire conference schedule. See how many wins and losses you predict.  You'll probably be surprised.

A minimum of 23 wins and Round of 32 appearance should be the baseline expectation.

I think the BT this year breaks down pretty neatly into 3 groups of teams

--First group--ILL; MSU; Michigan

--Second group (no particular order)--USC; OSU; UCLA; IU; Purdue; Nebraska; Iowa; Wisconsin; Maryland

--Third group--MN; Oregon; Washington; NW; Rutgers; PSU

The last six teams really suck.

The middle group of 9 should all be decent teams.  We're picked 9th in the BT.  Talent-wise, I'd say USC & OSU will have a talent edge over IU.  We have as much or more talent than the last 5.  Of the last five, Wisconsin & Iowa have better coaching that could elevate them over IU.  We could finish anywhere from 4th to 12th.

I'm not factoring in our easy BT schedule; I'm talking about the actual projected worth of the teams rather than how the teams will fiinish in the standings.

@openwheel A day or so later, it doesn't really bother me.  Might even agree with it to a certain extent.  We have more high major guys on this team, to be certain.  And there's a sense of comfort that comes from that.  But we don't have anyone as good as Lamar Wilkerson.  And outside Sherrell, I'd contend we don't have anyone as good as Tucker was.  So, just assuming we're going to be a top 30 level team, because the team is comprised with more high major guys, probably isn't a great approach.

I do think outside Lamar's position, we're better, and deeper at all other positions.  So we should be better than last year's team.  But will they all gel enough to allow them to make the big jump up to being a top 20-30 team?  I think that requires something that is probably difficult for a guy like Miya to quantify.  So he's seeing a decent roster, but one that's lacking any obvious, All B10, NBA level guys.  And we have the same coach of a team that stumbled down the stretch last year... and certainly didn't "coach up" the roster he had.

Having said all this, I think finishing top 30 or so in these analytics measurements like Miya's, and making the NCAA easily, should be DeVries mandate, THIS year.   So... I can see how a numbers nerd could rate IU where he did.  But I don't think that's where we should be, or should end up.  As that will imply a pretty poor overall coaching job, by DeVries.

Sounds like Harris will fill Lamar's role.

The interview posted by the huddle or someone here (107.7 ?) Coach DeVries said Harris when he's in a groove can amaze you, said Indiana fans are going to love him. Said Harris can not be doing so much from the 3 range, then bag three of them just that quick. Coach sounds impressed by Harris shooting so far.

My concern, was looking at some of our losses especially down the stretch where just a couple wins and we're dancing, I see box scores with the entire team with good numbers and Wilkerson all of a sudden with a 1 for 8, Dorn 1 for 7 . Or it was Tucker 1 for-large-number of shots. And we'd lose...

That's the problem I have with the 'green light' ...

You can't be so inconsistent just because 'on average' you shoot an OK percentage. Inconsistency loses many games on those cold nights if you keep gunning, when by contributing in other ways the team could still win.

Not sure why you would think that after last night. I watched Nebraska play STL Friday night. We are better than them.

Then you don't know his history as a poster. I didn't even have to see his post to know that's what he'd say.

I hate the quote.  Saying stupid crap like that is why I expect so little of him.

I hated him saying it last year, and allowing it. I still hate it.

But he's the boss. Rim protection and rebounding will make a difference.
