After all the hype on this portal class I saw around the internet I was expecting them to be picked top four in the conference and be ranked in the top 15.

That's what happens when you have a myopic view in an isolated vacuum and don't pay attention to the competition.
fwiw - all data driven models will have teams like IU fairly low as they use last years stats in their metrics. Also of note, none of the data driven analytic sites were created with the intention to be used as a preseason prognostication. They don't spend much time or effort doing it, it doesn't incorporate anything that predicts player improvement, and cannot predict team synergy in any way.
They just do it so fans have something to talk about and to get their sites more clicks.
It's dumb ... treat it as such. Until sometime in January when Kenpom, Torvik and Maya actually have enough data to mean something, it's about as accurate as a monkey flinging shit at a moving target.
@arioznahoosier4554 Was there a lot of hype? I remember tons of excitement around the Burton and Sherrell signings. But overall, while most acknowledged it was a better roster than last year, there were A LOT of concerns about big man depth, lack of NBA level talent, etc...

The hype was from fans brains....
Each transfer. with the exception of Burton/Sherrell came to IU needing a bit of development and neither of them have glaringly high metrics. The rest had very low efficiency stats.
The same stats that are combined with last years team eff, being used by the analysts to make these silly predictions. IU finished 45th last year in KP. So that's obviously carrying a lot of weight in our rating. He has them 47th this year. Why? Because WV team metrics were better and the players coming in last year had severely high mid major numbers.
So, there's mathematical reasons IU is so low. Add one solid all conference level player with great numbers, who would then account for 17+ percent of the total rating, and dropping the lowest rating in the rotation, IU probably moves up 20+ spots.
As an example of how useless these models are as a preseason predictor. Torvik has Sam Alexis as IU's highest rated off player .. and getting the third most usage. *eyeroll*. Since they all use the same formula basically .. Miya and KP probably have him the same or close.
KP, Torvik and Miya are good sites, when they have the correct stats but as preseason prediction models, they're worse than the sports writers who spend five minutes making their silly preseason lists.

Maybe not on here but if you ever look at btown banners there sure was. Some guys were talking final four. But then again I dont think most of those guys have ever lived in reality so I guess I should take it with a grain of salt.
