@cavanagh Different time with NIL and the portal, but I'd not bet against a motivated Brad Stevens. I mean, when has a smart, driven, dedicated coach come into a situation and proven himself at a level he'd never been at previously through sheer will, dedication and determination? Hey, wait a sec....

Why does his name come up though? Somebody knows his kids, and really really really likes him? Meaning, isn't he where he wants to be? NBA executive?

Red Auerbach is as likely to arise from the grave and coach here. Or living coaches, Dan Hurley. Or Kelvin Sampson. I'll start tracking their planes.

(NVM, I thought someone speculated he may return to coaching... They just said with NIL he'd be good, then as did Kkott. Guess I was never enamoured with Stevens. There are a lot of very good coaches. He had a hot streak with the right players, but he was good.)

@mtbrider NBA coaching life is wayyyyy easier than CBB is. There are no rules in college no enforceable contracts, you have to deal with agents and parents and teenagers. In the NBA you can pretty much just coach.

May was connected to the Orlando Magic job earlier this summer/spring and my guess is he was waiting for a better situation and got that with Dallas.

Then get a GM.  Either he always had his sights on the NBA or something else is going on.  We all know how stellar Ward Manuel is.

The GM only solves part of the problem you still have to deal with  parents and hand hold the kids nonstop.  It seems like one giant pain in the rear.

@arioznahoosier4554 It's not really that hard to understand: not only do you have to deal with all those different factions while coaching college, the season also never stops. When you're not playing and practicing, you need to be recruiting (unless your name is Mike Woodson!). It just weighs on guys over time. So, guys who have always been happy and only ever saw themselves as college coaches, eventually decide that going to the pros and only having to focus on playing and practicing, becomes more appealing. Sounds like nowadays that most P4 programs are flying on chartered planes, but he also mentioned travel being easier as a pro coach. Even though there are more games, they hit 3-4 games on a road trip and then have a 3-4 game homestand, so that becomes more appealing too. And, it's really not arguable, because I'm telling you what a guy who has probably been coaching in college for 20 years and also held jobs as a scout or assistant coach in the NBA is saying is the opinion of he and his fellow coaches.

The guy interviewing may said he had to cut the interview off  several times to take phone calls from recruits and this was just a few days after the title. He got no time to even celebrate. Some guys will never get an NBA chance so they are stuck in college but I find it hard to see guys staying 30 years like they used to. The new norm would have to wear you down beyond belief after awhile.

He comes up in every fanbase when there's an opening. His Indiana ties just make him come up slightly more here. He's also only 49, so likely to keep coming up for decades to come.
