@cavanagh It's the opener against Alabama A&M. It's not like MLB Opening Day where it's an event. It's a Wednesday night in November against a nobody.

@gr8iufan screw that. IU hoops fans have sat through enoough malfiecencous to last a lifetime. I'm all in with CDD and will be in my seat tomorrow night.

That said, criticism is going to come fast and furious from some. The stink is still strong.

You're a fanatic Cav and that's not a bad thing.  Most fans don't ten grand flying to the Bahamas and then record the entire event for everyone.  Most fans don't start a podcast and feed chicken wings to Xavier Johnson and Parker Stewart.  You're unique in that regard.

And most fans wanted Chris Beard or Will Wade. They have no idea who Darian DeVries and most of our players even are.  They need to win games and people will come.

I don't know.  I bet the average IU fan didn't have much of an opinion on the coach we hired except wanting unrealistic big names like Brad or maybe Bruce or Dusty.  Some wanted Beard on the message boards, but I doubt the average IU fan cared much, they may have cared once they learned about his background.  Will Wade is not very well known among normie IUBB fans.

CDD will either win or he won't.  It will take 2-3 years to find out like it or not.

@cavanagh I get that. I’m the same way with football. Even coming off a CFP appearance that game wasn’t close to selling out.

its disappointing, but take it from me, don’t let people not being excited steal the joy of what today means to you.

I am excited to watch this team play games that count. However with an 18-month old, I’m very happy to watch from the recliner in his room.

@tammany I probably need to avoid watching Iowa play this year.  Or just force myself to dislike McCollum via that rumors he told Dolson to "F off"...figuratively.  Because I watched them last night...and damn it, they're going to be good.  He's such a good basketball coach.  DeVries is too, I just have a feeling McCollum will be statues outside Carver Hawkeye someday, good.

I suspect DeVries was going to be offered first. Judging by Dolson's comments about being impressed by his team in the Bahamas, and having that long Creighton assistance tenure. And, if that was the case, McCollum was smart to tell us to sod off, and go to Iowa. Maybe where his heart was anyway, but I'll never be sure if he wasn't gone after earliest and hard it wouldn't have happened.

I love McCollum's style. Had never watched it until last year, but when I see guys who win big at any level, that's who I go after. Not retreads. He's Cig-like.

We got a good Coach in the end. I'm satisfied. DeVries will get it done here. We'll compete for titles eventually. Someday he'll have an overall winning record against McCollum and Dusty May. Grin Then both he and some of our fans will be able to sleep at night.

By all accounts McCollum knew he wasn't getting the offer.  I've also heard from several people that he really disliked Whitten.

@dbmhoosier I very strongly suspect that those Whitten rumors are unfounded.  Everything I know about both of them leads me to believe they'd like each other very much.  And further, I seriously doubt he got to the point where he would have had much of any interaction with Whitten, anyways... which makes those rumors even less likely.

We got a good one, so this isn't like living with Woody, or Davis or someone, when we could have had McCollum.  And obviously he's won 1 game for Iowa, who knows where he'll take that program.  I just have a strong suspicion they'll be a perennial B10 contender and deep NCAA team, sooner rather than later.

A few people (who may have had an axe to grind) did report that he did not like Whitten because she was insisting on certain controls over the program... I was doubtful. More than any other admin of other schools? Might have come from the Daily Student...

But if people do know that to be true, i.e. they're tight with McCollum, I do appreciate the information.

He easily could have not liked the vibe here, I can see that. But I also think he knew he was the fallback to DeVries, and if so he did the right thing, even if he was interested.

Hmm… not sure what controls she would place on our MBB program.  Cig is very happy with her approach to FB.  Axe to grind rumor indeed…

@openwheel Yeah, her controls don't seem to be hindering Cig in any fashion.  If anything, she may have indicated that recruiting and development should take precedence over wine parties with cronies and yes men, but I can't imagine that would have soured BMC.

I for sure would have took May or McCollum over DD.  May 100% is better will see on McCollum.  How we mest up May is classic IU

I watched an interview McCollum did where he talked specifically about why he had stayed at NWMS for so long, and how important he felt it was to take interviews, but not jump at jobs that weren't perfect fits.  His answer focused quite a lot on not wanting to give up any sort of control on how he recruits, how he runs his teams, how he interacts with stakeholders, etc...  His implication was that he hadn't found a high major program at that point, through many interviews, that wouldn't have wanted him to change how he did things in some way.

Maybe Dolson and Whitten went too far with how much "help" he'd get at IU with all our resources.  Or that it would be implied that he'd have to embrace all of that?

No matter what, McCollum at IU, if he had been allowed to use all of IU's resources how he saw fit... would 100% have been successful.

I have a high level confidence DeVries will be successful too.  But not the same level of certainty I had for the potential of McCollum.
