After this season. He always coveted the IU job but it was never meant to be.

Was about to post this. He did a great job at UNM and Nevada. Happy retirement, well earned
Thank you for reading Hoosier Huddle
He definitely had the Lobos achieving and the fanbase satisfied. He was in a sweet spot there.
Steve Alford retiring? Man does that make me feel old. Still remember the thrills he and his teammates provided with the NCAA Championship in 1987.

While I don't think he ever would've met the expectations of a very fractured fanbase, I do think there was a small window where the stars aligned and he could've been fairly successful here if IU had offered the job to him instead of CTC.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

Nah the time to have hired him was in 2001. It almost happened from what I was told.

The morons in charge then wanted a complete break from Knight. They wouldn't hire a legacy. Also, a legacy taking the job after Knight's firing would have been viewed as a betrayal. It wasn't happening.

Yeah, that was my thought. I'm not sure Alford would've taken it without RMK's blessing TBH. I think by the time Crean was hired, Knight had retired from coaching and I think enough time and hires had passed by then Alford wouldn't feel obliged to RMK.

Alford was on RMK's shitlist for taking the Iowa job and then bringing in Recker. He wouldn't have ever had Knight's blessing. As much as I loved the man, he was a petty tyrant.
Thankfully, we won't have to hear his name brought up during coaching searches any longer.
he did a great job at mo state too. got them to a sweet sixteen. i dont think they've been back in the tournament since he left. seems he had a knack for mid major coaching
He did fine at UCLA too. Three sweet 16s in five years.
Would have won here. But our athletic department and faculty, not too bright back then on 'winning'. Other (often dumb) things were much more important to them. But, we missed on plenty of coaches who were as good, a few better.
Good luck Steve. Thanks for those huge 3s in the title game.
Plus much more.
He is not great coach by any means but he certainly would have done better at IU then some of the clowns we hired.
@openwheel has more to do with UCLA than anything he did. No coach has really struggled there. Cronin FF. Howland 3 FFs. Steve Lavin had 5 S16s out of 8 years (with an E8). Harick won a title, etc.
Steve's accomplishments there aren't really any significant upgrade over what Crean did here. Alford would not have done any any better. 30+ years as a D1 coach and never once past a S16. Fired from both P5 jobs he had.

Probably not but he would have been better than archie and woodson imo. Maybe crean level type stuff. Not sure on Devries last year was not good but with being able to buy a team with big money now maybe that will change.
