@bucketgetter I don't think it's that weird. The update posted seems to represent both sides and sounds plausible. Sounds like she sprayed him with pepper spray and he grabbed and maybe choked her at the time. Pepper spray is a super effective weapon and irritant. If she was pepper spraying him, personally I'd give him a pretty wide berth to defend himself and get her to stop. They're still young folks and were trying to live together. Emotions more raw and intense at that age. Sounds like a pretty normal dispute in that case. I trust whatever Cig does with this.

The police interviewed a witness and reviewed video evidence.

I’ve got no idea what to make of this.  Like others have said — IU will have to figure it out.

Don't know much what happened before the spraying but receiving pepper spray in the face would make me fighting mad.

@hoosier-clarion having been pepper sprayed breaking up a school fight early in my teaching career, I can confirm it’s not fun

Ugh... Glad the worst types of conclusions don't appear to apply in this situation.  Hopefully if there's more evidence available that makes it clear no arrest was warranted... hopefully that info is released as well.  Without that, the social media torches and pitchforks will be out in full force.  Maybe rightfully so!  The report we've read thus far, doesn't specify that she pepper sprayed him first, THEN he reacted by choking her.  That is a pretty important distinction vs him choking her first and her defending herself with pepper spray, as an example of the questions that I'm already seeing floating around.

But at this point, gotta trust that the BPD released them because that's the right decision for the situation.

BPD responds to a disturbance. Both actors agree on the details. Both actors committed legal assault on the other. The police have no choice but to make an arrest.

It's the prosecutor who decides whether or not to formally charge, after reviewing the incident in it's totality. They chose not to, it appears. And from what little I've read (the same as all you folks) I think that was the right call. Not every incident needs to be turned into a full blown prosecution. (I also suspect -- but don't know -- neither party was interested in pressing charges.)

Sounds like Cig needs to bring them in together and ask them “how many steps are there in Memorial Stadium?” And when they don’t know, say “touch em all. It’s my wedding gift to you both.”

@tammany Don’t think there’s anything to figure out at all.  Just have a talk with him and close the book on it.

At one of my HS parties, someone unleashed pepper spray in my basement, cleared the entire party to the backyard, as I tried to figure out wtf happened.

Anyone in proximity to the pepper spray was choking if it has the same potency as it did back then.

@ams66 Yeah, I guess not "normal", maybe not that surprising at that age? Remember, few women carried mace/pepper spray at least when I was that age, or else I'd guess I'd know more people who would've experienced it. I knew more than a few guys who got slugged or had things thrown at them, that I'd imagine would be the equivalent of getting pepper sprayed today. Our tent got maced as hazing as a freshmen at XC camp and that alone was awful. Pepper spray I think is even more intense and irritating. If someone pepper sprayed me, I'd not label just about any physical response as assault, but self-defense, including a punch, hair pull or choking and I don't think it would be considered a crime, unless it just carried on. Sounds like that is probably where this is headed. If I were the coaches, I think I'd be suggesting/requiring a new roommate in addition to any other punishment.
