Wasn't Kraft the one so many thought we should "back up the Brinks truck" for when Fred retired?

@iugradman

Has he done a bad job? It remains to be seen how Matt Campbell performs but Dolson is batting .500 on big coaching hires.

@unclemark I remember. He could’ve closed the Brad Stevens deal. 😂

@iugradman wtf do you want? He just won AD of the year for good reason.

Well, men’s basketball can’t even make the NCAA tournament, and women’s basketball has fallen off as has baseball. Dolson has been a mixed bag.

He wants to be unhappy and complain.

To put equal weightings on each sport is dumb.  Football is 80% of college athletics.

There are of course fair criticisms and concerns with the IU athletic dept, but he posts in bad faith.

Name three or four ADs that are not a mixed bag?

Hiring people especially a coach is not something that anyone is going to be perfect at since there are SO many variables.

@albino It shouldn’t be hard to find a coach who can make a 68 team postseason tournament every year.

Give me some names of who we would trade Dolson for? Not too many universities out there (if any) killing it in both major sports right now. Plus the fact that our athletic department isn't broke and is a huge player in the NIL space is mostly a credit to him. Are things perfect? no. But my god this is the best position we have been in in decades, maybe ever.

Mixed bag lol

Not sure why you are laughing about someone calling Dolson a mixed bag.  You may not agree with that but the opinion isn't so crazy as to be laughable.

He made the right choice in the sport that matters most (financially) but that wasn't his only hire.

- Mike Woodson - horrible hire

- Curt Cignetti - obviously homerun hire

- Darian DeVries - didn't look so good last year but jury is still out

Moren and Mercer were both here prior to Dolson's arrival.  So the only thing Dolson could be blamed for is not pulling the plug on them.  Although they haven't necessarily been awful, just mediocre.  Given where Moren had the program a few years ago, mediocre is a big step backwards so it will be interesting to see how long they give her to right the ship.

@hurryinghoosiers I think we all have explained throughout this thread why that is "laughable". And you want to bring Moren into this? The coach who was on a 7 year run unmatched by any coach in program history? Yeah one bad year doesn't change a thing. c'mon now

He’s certainly been far superior to a couple of his predecessors.

@hurryinghoosiers He didn’t hire Woody.  That was forced on him.  Everybody knows this.  CDD was all Scott though… rough start but we’ll see.

Being an AD is more than just hires.  He actually kept Cig at little old IU when all the big programs came calling.  And for a school with a small 55K football stadium… our NIL is pretty darn good.  As is our overall AD revenue.

I get some smaller sports could be better, I agree.  But big picture we are the top of college sports right now.  That isn’t a mixed bag.

”Forced on him” isn’t really an accurate portrayal of what happened, but the football and basketball jobs have always been group decisions. Not saying Woody would’ve been Dolson’s choice had his authority to hire been sole, but it was never going to be that anyway. Woodson’s hire started many years before it actually was finalized.

Dolson was a year into his tenure at the top job at IU. I know he had been here a long time, but still, no way he was going to push back hard against a legacy Indiana player with NBA ties. Heck maybe he wanted him. But if he didn't no way was he pushing back hard at tha point of his tenure.

His hiring process and the non-readiness of our program hit the ground running after the DeVries hire, seems disturbing. But, he did interview guys, and had a shot at a couple, and picked DeVries.  So, maybe it wasn't just falling in love from a vigorous loss to Miami plus a decent early season tournament at Drake. Which has been my opinion, but probably since I wanted the Iowa guy.

Our coach seems pretty good. We'll see how his freshman develop. Coach seems to have a decent eye for wings anyway.

Anyway, not sure how Dolson is a big topic in a thread about Penn State bleeding their fans in a big way. It's Penn State though, they'll get it. If they 'almost fill' the stadium it will still be a tough crowd, and a ton of money in the program. They'll fill it for the big games.
