In 1+ years of an expanded playoff, so far, your hypothesis is wrong. We got in last year, despite 'being Indiana'...pretty comfortably, it turned out. And this year we've got a 68% chance of making it at this point, which is among the top 5 highest chances, if I'm not mistaken.

We made the playoff last year. Our playoff odds right now (with a long way to go) are +128, or a 44% chance, and we're ranked #8. I'm struggling to see an issue with our non-con. Our nine game B1G schedule is almost always enough in terms of chances to prove ourselves.
Now that the SEC and to a lesser extent the ACC have changed their scheduling, I expect we'll follow suit and add some P4's to the non-con -- it now makes strategic sense. It will also help that our program will be more mature by then with less reliance on transfers (and less need for time for the team to gel/develop).
except the point we were arguing was our schedule this year and it's relevancy to our perceived value as a program and how that works against us and how it compared to ND's schedule this year. It may all work out. We control our own destiny at this point. Some of ND's opponents may be awful. But their programs aren't necessarily perceived as such and hence it may give them an edge if it comes down to it. That's all I'm saying. And ODU was scheduled as a sure thing win when we scheduled them. And they may have a decent team this year but perception is that they are a cupcake. That's been my argument. And a guy like finebaum will say as much and put that out there to diminish our accomplishments. He will do the same thing to ND if he can make the argument.
No one puts ODU on their schedule to beef up their schedule to get a quality win. They put them on to get a sure thing win by a lot of points , a feel good game for your squad and fan base. It's not looked at as a "test" game.
Louisville or Virginia no matter how good or bad they are carries more style points. Is what it is.

I think that 68% is because ESPN sees us winning one of either Oregon or PSU which I can't see happening. Believe they have us with a 51% chance of beating PSU last I checked. Lose both of those and win the others and our odds probably drop in half.

@dbmhoosier Personally I only trust the betting markets, which have us at 44% to make the playoff. Sort of tells me if we play Oregon and PSU competitively and maybe get some breaks with other teams we can make it at 10-2 — our chances of 11-1 have to be a lot worse than 44%. If we get smoked in those two big road games we are probably out.

Probably not. But it's hard to see that happening twice. Oregon scares me. Penn State does not.
I'm more concerned about Michigan finishing with only two losses (to #5 Oklahoma and wherever Ohio St. is ranked when they play). You KNOW the Michigan name will get them in over Indiana. It is possible the win at Iowa could/should be the difference; given IU does not upset either Oregon or PSU. Either IU or Mich could slip up and lose a game they are favored to win.
