@kkott I’ve said plenty of times we played bad.  It was a close game of course we could have lost, that’s what a close game is.

I don’t really get cherry picking everything that could have went better (but didn’t) for Iowa and not IU.

What I disagree on is the statement it should have been a loss.

@gros-louis well reasoned argument and excellent support for your counterpoints.

So, with 3 minutes to go after that interception, you felt great about us winning that game? I question if some of you watched that game, or remember your feelings before they missed that kick. I was watching with another IU fan and I had to talk him off the ledge and remind him even with a good kicker, a 40 yarder with the game on the line isn't a gimme in college. I credit us for being in position to win, but that easily could have been an L.

First off, my comment was in jest a bit.

No, I didn't feel great, but I wasn't doomsday either, and I was there with 70,000 people not cheering for us.  Having seen what we did to end the 1st half and having much more time than that available, I knew there was a good shot for us to at minimum tie the game.

That said, we weren't 'outplayed', as you call it. In fact, I think we probably won every statistical category, or at least most of them.  We didn't have boneheaded plays/penalties like they did.  Fewer turnovers.  Better special teams.  It was a close, hard fought game in a raucous environment.  We came out ahead, just barely.  But to suggest we got outplayed or it was a result of luck (or more luck than any normal game has in it), I think is disingenuous.

But we can disagree.  No hard feelings!

I think both of you bring excellent points. Did we get lucky with the missed field goal and their QB getting hurt.  No doubt. That changed the game for sure. They make the field goal now we have to get a TD to win or risk overtime on the road .. does that change the play calling. Does that make the players  a little more anxious ?   But we are a good team and we took advantage of their misfortunes and won a road game. Two years ago we lose that game hands down. On the other hand as far as being outplayed, I'd put it this way Iowa played better than their usual or expected selves.  We played poorer than what we are.  So from that angle they outmatched our execution and perhaps enthusiasm at times. What's great again is we kept our composure enough to come back and win that game late.  That shouldn't be lost.  If we want to ascend to the upper tier of college football though, we have to play better than we did against Iowa. I think we can all agree on that.

sorry bud , but using that line on everyone you disagree with.... maybe you're the one with a lack of ball knowledge....

I just need to do a better job of remembering that I'm not sitting around talking with people I know and that know me and understand my sarcasm and ribbing we give each other.

same here.  It gets lost via text.  I'll try to remember your humor going forward.  In the end we are all rooting for the same team and outcome. Smile

@hoosiers94 on their last series, I think the chances are very high if their starter's in there, they convert and run the clock out and we don't have a chance at a TD. Great game for us and we took a lot of shots and dealt some too, but I think we were very lucky to come out with a W.

A thought on scheduling.   The UVA game was bought out because IU wanted another home game.  Pretty much up until Dolson became AD it was rare for IU to have more than 6 home games, when the majority of other P4 teams played 7 or more.

A thought on the Iowa game.   That was simply a good, old-fashioned defensive slobber-knocker ( RIP, coach Mal) of a game.  Both defenses played really good football.  Kudos to IU for getting a win against a very solid team in a crazed environment on the road.

@kkott Some of those things are true, for sure.  But the refs also missed a blatant pass interference call near the endzone in the first half.  Maybe we score another TD on that possession?  It would have put us in the Red zone, I believe.  The refs also missed at least 3 very, very blatant holding calls on some of their successful plays out to the edge of our defense.  One of them was in their scoring drive.  Maybe they call that, and have to punt it to us, and we get good field position and score.  A few "unlucky" obvious missed calls or we could have led 17-3 or something at halftime, and the game would have been essentially over.

Missed blatant calls like that are probably just as dictated by chance as missed FGs and injuries are.

IU played poorly.  One of its more poor games by Cigs standards since he got to IU.  And we outgained Iowa, in Kinnick, and ended up beating them on the scoreboard.   I was salty, for sure, while the game was happening.  But nearly a week's worth of perspective has me feeling pretty darn optimistic about it all.

The only concern I have is why Cig and Shanahan can't figure out a better silent count system.  Perplexing how they can be so good in basically every other area...and not be able to handle something that should be fairly manageable.

It’s nice to finally have a program under Cig that wins despite an ugly performance.  We never were the “other” team.  We always bumbled or stumbled our way to a loss.
Kinnick is a tough place to play.  There is a saying that claims Kinnick is where “top 5 teams go to die.”  There have been at least 5 times in the past 17 years where a top 5 team has been upset by Iowa there, including knocking Ohio State out of a 2017 playoff spot.
Iowa State is undefeated and has been ranked ahead of IU most of the season and they needed a 54 yard field goal on their own home field to beat Iowa by 3.
Iowa is never an easy out at their home field.

I wasnt caring too much whether that final Iowa FG was a make or a miss. Felt very good we could win it, after a stop with time left.

Of course I was very happy to see it not go in, but it didnt change my - we will win this - attitude all that much. I had thought the Mendoza interception had cooked us, (cannot throw one there...) after a solid return of it. Then on third down the screen looked set up well enough to get the yards, and I thought again we were finished off. Nope...

So before the FG try, I felt we were going to win. Something had finally gone our way in a tough game. TY defense. Most years they dont. I hollered on the FG miss though for sure!
