Fixing the Indiana Run Game

Fixing the Indiana Run Game

Written By: Nate Comp (@NathanComp1)

Much was left to be desired from the Indiana run game in the 2020 season.

An inability to dominate the line of scrimmage in run blocking led the Hoosier stable of running backs to average just 3.1 yards per carry. The Hoosiers did not combine for over 1000 yards rushing. At its worst, it was actually harming the team – Indiana rushed for negative yardage in the narrow defeat at Ohio State. The schemes were predictable, too. Stevie Scott carried 156 times, while no other running back handled it more than 32 times.

After Flirting with the Transfer Portal IU RB Sampson James is 'All In' and 'Feels Great'

Way back at the end of February the Hoosiers received a scare as backup running back and former four-star recruit Sampson James entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. This was on the heels of the Hoosiers losing their strength staff, led by David Ballou and Dr. Matt Rhea to Alabama. James’s trip to the portal lasted just a little while as the sophomore pulled his name back and was back on the field in cream and crimson in March as spring football started.

David Ellis: Dynamic Weapon Ready to be Deployed in 2020

Heading into the 2019 season, the Indiana Hoosiers had a running back room filled with talent, potential and depth. Ivory Winters left before his freshman season began, Cole Gest exited stage left and then after the season, Ronnie Walker transferred out. The attrition left IU with only two scholarship running backs with any type of experience and one scholarship true freshman. Stevie Scott and Sampson James are a formidable one-two punch and newcomer Tim Baldwin Jr. should be a nice addition but having only three scholarship running backs is a scary situation for an offense that wants to emphasize running the ball. Indiana’s coaches scoured the graduate transfer market and even looked at adding another running back to the freshman recruiting class. Ultimately though, they feel the best answer was already on campus. The decision was made to switch sophomore wide receiver and all-purpose athlete David Ellis to running back.

Poised For Another Big Year, Stevie Scott III Focuses on Being Aggressive

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Indiana running back Stevie Scott III will enter the 2020 season with 1,982 rushing yards over his first two seasons in Bloomington. Being 1,018 rushing yards from becoming just the eighth Hoosier in history is not too shabby for a player who might have ended up a linebacker had head coach Tom Allen had his way. But as with all great athletes there is a thirst for more.

Trust and the belief that Indiana’s staff will maximize his talent and let him compete for carries are what led Aurbun Hills speedster David Holloman to commit to Tom Allen and his staff on April 30. “I chose Indiana because they believe me and you know they believe that I can be one of the top guys to come into the class as one of the leaders and ultimately my decision came down to getting a fair opportunity to compete. I feel like they can maximize my talent and development me” Holloman told Hoosier Huddle.

With the loss of Michael Penix to a season-ending sternoclavicular injury, Peyton Ramsey has stepped up to his previous role as starting quarterback. The redshirt junior heads a No. 13 national passing offense, and with just three picks on the season, has grown into quarterback every team wishes they had to call for backup.

Patience Has Paid off for the Hoosiers with Stevie Scott’s Performances

The offense has undeniably been the strongest unit of the Hoosiers in 2019. Even with the injury-stricken offensive line and unpredictable quarterback situation for the first half of the season, the one constant has been the tough running, timely pass catching and consistent blocking provided by sophomore running back Stevie Scott.
