2019 Indiana Football Fall Camp Report: August 5th

2019 Indiana Football Fall Camp Report: August 5th

Written by Andrew Walker

Indiana Football was back on the practice field today, and from the very beginning, the place was electric. A shoulder pads but not full speed team practice followed some of the position drills. During team practice, redshirt Junior Marcelino Ball was a missile on the defensive side of the ball. In the lineman drills, the offensive line looks great, but the defensive line looks better. Peyton Ramsey, Jack Tuttle and Mike Penix were all given the opportunity to display their passing ability, but it was the redshirt Junior Ramsey that played the most QB1 today.

IU's Defensive Line Hopes to Build on 2016 Success

IU's Defensive Line Hopes to Build on 2016 Success

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers entered the 2016 season with a new defensive coordinator, a new defensive line coach and a number of holes on the defensive line. Starters like Nick Mangieri and Darius Latham were gone and IU had more questions than answers. However, new coordinator Tom Allen and new position coach Mark Hagen had a quick impact on the young line and the unit many (myself included) questioned prior to the season outperformed expectations during a very successful 2016 season. After finishing at or near the bottom defensively for years, IU crept up into the middle of the pack. They finished ninth in the league in scoring defense (surrendering 27.2 points per game) and tenth in rushing defense (160.4 yards per game). Despite having no stand out pass rushers, IU was able to cobble together enough pressure as a group to finish fifth in the Big Ten in sacks (2.5 per game). The Hoosiers lose a pair of contributors in Ralph Green and Patrick Dougherty but, for the first time in a number of years, expectations are high for the IU defense and the line hopes to serve as an imposing tone-setter in their second year under Mark Hagen’s guidance.

Who is Number 54 on Defense? Why, It's Ja'Merez Bowen

Well that’s Ja’merez Bowen, and you may want to get used to that name, since he figures to come up in a big way for the Hoosier defense this season and beyond.

The Bull and Generating a Pass Rush

The Bull and Generating a Pass Rush

One of the larger question marks surrounding the Indiana football program as we look towards the 2016 season is how the defense will look under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Allen’s defensive formation, a 4-2-5, features a pair of new positions that IU fans haven’t seen in Bloomington before. The “Husky” serves as the fifth member of the secondary. The “Bull” position is mainly the fourth defensive lineman. The primary focus of the Bull is to generate pressure on the quarterback. Pass rush is something that has been lacking within the IU defense the past couple of seasons and it stands out as a critical part to finding success in 2016. The top candidates for the new position are former Bandit linebackers Nile Sykes and Greg Gooch. The transition is not an easy one but Tom Allen feels the two are doing quite well
