2019 Countdown - #34

Name – Cam Jones

Position – Defensive Back (Sophomore)

Hometown – Memphis, Tennessee (St. Benedict at Auburndale)

Height – 6’3”

Weight – 224

Cam Jones came to Indiana will big expectations and he burst onto the scene as a freshman and earned the Hoosiers Defensive Newcomer of the Year Award in 2018. Jones played in 11 games at the husky position and posted 20 tackles. However, he was a takeaway machine. Jones intercepted one pass, broke up two other passes, forced two fumbles and recovered another. He has a nose for the ball and expectations are through the roof for the sophomore in 2019 and Indiana defensive coordinator Kane Wommack has big plans for him.

“He's special, just in terms of athleticism, but where I've been (as) impressed is just his natural instincts. He just loves to play a violent and fierce style of game. And that's where you're just, 'Golly, man, you can just use this kid in a lot of different ways” Wommack said this spring.

Jones is a Swiss Army knife of a player as well and Wommack does not want to pigeon hole him into just one position.

“I believe it is my responsibility, as a coach, to take the athletes we have and utilize their full skill-set," Wommack explained. "So if I just made Cam Jones a one-dimensional linebacker, or a Cover 2 safety and that's all he does, I'm not utilizing that kid's full skill-set. We brought him here to showcase what he can do, to both help us and help him. So it's my responsibility, as the play-caller, to be able to utilize his full skill-set.”

Fans will have to note that Jones will be wearing number four this season, instead of 34, because he is sure to be all over the field in the fall.
