2024 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 67 Days (Lincoln Murff)

Written By Nick Gonzales (@nrgonzales_)

The 2024 Hoosier Huddle Countdown to kickoff continues with 67 days until the start of the Hoosier’s football season! Every day, we take a look at players on the current roster and highlight their roles in the upcoming season. Today we are looking at defensive back Lincoln Murff.

Name: Lincoln Murff

Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana (Ben Davis)

Position: Defensive Back

Year: Redshirt Freshman

Height/Weight: 5’10”/178 pounds

Social Media: Twitter: (@LincolnMurff)

Murff came into the program as a walk-on during the 2023 season and redshirted his first collegiate season after not seeing any game action. He mainly played receiver during his time at Ben Davis, but made the switch to defensive back for his collegiate career. As a senior, he earned Indiana Football Coaches Association Academic All-State and recorded 65 receptions, 667 yards, and seven touchdowns. Not to mention, he also lettered in basketball and assisted the team to a state championship and their first undefeated season in school history.

While not having extensive experience as a defensive back, the Hoosiers could really use the help at that position. After losing Jordan Grier, James Monds III, and Kobee Minor to the transfer portal, IU has to beef up the secondary. Murff has some big shoes to fill and will most likely have the chance to do so. He is very speedy and agile and has the ability to track the ball well. While Indiana’s secondary may not look so frightening at first glance, they’re going to have to be when covering some big names in the Big Ten such as Emeka Egbuka, Jahmal Banks, and Jeremiah Hunter.

During this year’s spring game, the secondary made some clean tackles for their first time doing so under the leadership of Coach Cignetti. While the 2nd string defense struggled a bit while covering Indiana’s outstanding receiver corps, the starters did a great job locking them up. This group has a ton of untapped potential, especially Murff.

This year’s defensive backs have the chance to surprise the Big Ten with their quickness and playmaking abilities. Since Murff has some hard working and competitive teammates who currently stand in front of him on the depth chart, Cignetti will most likely utilize his talents on special teams. However, even though Murff isn’t a starting cornerback yet, he sure as heck will push himself and fight for every possible minute on the gridiron.

The Hoosier Huddle Countdown to Kickoff continues with Day 66 tomorrow!
