2022 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 64 Days (Race Stewart)
/Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)
The 2022 Hoosier Huddle Countdown is chugging along and we are now in the mid-60s and working our way through the defensive linemen. Today’s profile piece focuses on a walk-on playing football in his hometown: Race Stewart.
Name: Race Stewart
Hometown: Bloomington, IN
Position: Defensive Lineman
Year: Redshirt Freshman
Height/Weight: 6’3”/309 pounds
The Indiana Hoosiers have a few players from Bloomington populating the roster. With two major high schools in town, that’s not a huge surprise. One of those individuals is a walk-on that played for the Bloomington North Cougars. Race Stewart is a 6’3” defensive lineman that joined the program during the season and earned defensive scout team player of the week honors once during the 2021 campaign.
Stewart wrestled and played football at Bloomington North, earning all-conference honors in Conference Indiana on the gridiron. While he now plays defensive line, those all-conference honors came in part because of his play as an offensive guard and center. IU transitioned him to full-time defensive line when he arrived on campus and he has plenty of time left to continue progressing towards earning playing time.
Stewart is a member of a unit that IU hopes is much improved. The interior of the line is bigger than the Hoosiers have had, perhaps ever. LeDarrius Cox, Patrick Lucas, Sio Nofoagatoto’a, Demarcus Elliott and Nick James provide the beef in the middle. JH Tevis, Richard Thomas, James Head, Beau Robbins, Cooper Jones and a few others will hope to provide some pressure from the outside. Stewart likely won’t crack the rotation this season but there’s a chance he sees some time in games against Idaho and Western Kentucky if things are going well for the Hoosiers. With several years of eligibility remaining, Race Stewart will have an opportunity to develop into a rotation piece.
The countdown continues with a new profile each and every day so come back to hoosierhuddle.com daily!
