Indiana head football coach Kevin Wilson announced at his weekly press conference on Monday that starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld would be out for the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury that requires surgery. Sudfeld was injured in the first half of the loss at Iowa last Saturday. Wilson also added that he expects Sudfeld to make a full recovery.

On Saturday the Hoosiers fell 45-29 at Iowa, but may have suffered a loss bigger than the game. There were some highlights, a bunch of bad, and definitely a lot of ugly. So let’s get down to it and look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from Saturday’s loss.

The Good- Tevin Coleman is the best running back in the nation. He ran for 219 yards on just 15 carries and scored on 20 percent of his touches. He garnered the conference’s player of the week honors for his efforts. He now leads the nation in rushing and is on pace to break the 2,000-yard mark. He also became the first Hoosier rusher to hit the 1,000-yard mark since Levron Williams did so in 2001.

The Bad- Indiana’s first half defense was disappointing. Allowing Iowa to put up 38 first half points. It is not all on the defense as turnovers absolutely killed the Hoosier offense. Indiana had three interceptions, one from Nate Sudfeld and two from Chris Covington. Sudfeld’s pick was returned for a touchdown. The Hoosiers cannot afford to give up 14 points off of turnovers. Once again penalties plagued IU as they were flagged nine times for 110 yards.

The Ugly- Indiana suffered the one injury they could not afford to sustain. Quarterback Nate Sudfeld separated his left shoulder in the first half and is now doubtful to play this week against Michigan State. The backup quarterback is Chris Covington, but he did not look good in the second half against Iowa. Indiana has been reluctant to remove the redshirt on freshman Zander Diamont. If Sudfeld has to miss multiple games the Hoosiers are in serious trouble.

Sudfeld Injured in Loss vs. Iowa

The Indiana Hoosiers suffered more than a loss on the scoreboard today. Quarterback Nate Sudfeld was diagnosed with a shoulder separation that was bad enough to limit him to less than one half of football. Wilson said this after the game Saturday,  "His left shoulder got landed on. It's some degree of a separation and we'll evaluate it when we get back. I don't know if it's short or long term." No timetable has been announced for his injury, but the prognosis could be anywhere from a week to possibly six. Chris Covington replaced Sudfeld today and went three for 12 with two interceptions.

If there is anything to describe today it is train wreck. The Hoosiers fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and trailed 38-21 at the half. The lone bright spot for the Hoosiers was a terrific performance by whom other than Tevin Coleman. The Hoosiers also may have lost quarterback Nate Sudfeld to a separated shoulder for an extended period of time. However, coach Kevin Wilson did not have a timetable after the game. The Hoosiers did out score the Hawkeyes 8-7 in the second half but that fell way short as the final score was 45-29.
