2014 Recruiting Notebook: July 17, 2013

2014 Recruiting Notebook: July 17, 2013

We are inching closer to the halfway point between National Signing Day 2013 and its namesake on the 2013 calendar.  It has been a little over five months now since Kevin Wilson was able to bring in more four-star recruits in a single class than his predecessors did in the 11 previous seasons combined.  However, the momentum that the staff had to close out the 2013 class did not seem to carry over to 2014.  Indiana received their first commitment to the 2014 class on June 2nd, 2013 from Michael Barwick.  Just over a week early, to the day, from when the coaches heard from Isaac Griffith back in 2013.

While on its own merits the news was exciting, Barwick is still arguably the highest rated recruit to join the class thus far, the fact of the matter is that it once again signaled a late start for Hoosier recruiting.  While other programs had already signed handfuls of players, Indiana has just one.  But that’s when the dominoes started to fall again.

The Old Brass Spittoon: An Unknown Rivalry Game

The Old Brass Spittoon: An Unknown Rivalry Game

Most Indiana fans are intimately familiar with one of the trophy games that the Hoosiers play for. That is the Old Oaken Bucket which is a staple in Hoosier culture and has been contested by Indiana and Purdue dating back to 1925. However, there is a second trophy game that practically nobody, outside of a select few, truly know about.

That trophy is the Old Brass Spittoon and has been awarded to the winner of the Indiana-Michigan State football game. While the series dates back to 1922, the first time the trophy was up for grabs was in 1950. The trophy has a rather unusual story to say the very least. It is so unique and obscure that it actually was named in a Sports Illustrated for Kids article that listed college football’s most unusual trophies.

2013 Recruiting Redux: Talent for the Future

2013 Recruiting Redux: Talent for the Future

As already discussed in our first edition of Recruiting Redux, the 2013 Hoosier recruiting class is the most talented to walk on the campus in at least a decade, and very possibly of all-time.  One of the things that may have drawn them to Bloomington was Kevin Wilson’s penchant for playing the best players regardless of seniority.

While the head coach has shown that to be true during his first two years at the helm, 2013 might be a bit of a different story.  No so much in that he won’t play the man who can do the job best, but because there are finally less spots to fight for in the lineup.  Indiana returns somewhere between 16 and 20 starters depending on varying definitions of the word, but nevertheless it’s a hefty quantity.  This being the case it will be hard for many of the true freshman to make an immediate impact anywhere outside of special teams.

Last week we featured five Immediate Impact players that could break into the rotation their first year in Bloomington.  However, just because a player fails to see the field during his freshman season it doesn’t mean he is less talented than the players who are, as there are varying factors involved.  The key influence the majority of the time is positional depth.  While positions such as defensive tackle are ripe for the picking, the same cannot be said for spots like wide receiver or offensive line.  This week we are taking a look at the most talented players who will be contributors down the road for Indiana football.

Helmet Power Rankings

Helmet Power Rankings

Throughout the spring the Indiana Athletic Department and the Football program continuously dropped hits about the fact that something big was coming on June 3rd. What could it be?  Was it new jerseys, a new tradition they would try and create, or was it a candy-striped football field?!

It turned out to be none of those, however it was exciting nonetheless.  It was unveiled that the Hoosiers would be sporting five new helmet designs throughout the 2013 season.

Winners & Losers: The Nine Game Big Ten Schedule

It was back in April when the Big Ten announced that the conference’s athletic directors had unanimously recommended both the beginning of a new football division alignment for 2014, in addition to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2016.  The new division configurations were announced immediately.  They will feature Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers in the East Division while the West Division consists of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin.

However, the Big Ten brass waited a few months until coming out with the schedules for the new nine-game conference slate. But here it is...
