The Indiana Hoosiers wrapped up their 10th spring practice on Tuesday morning inside of the Mellencamp Pavilion and all eyes were on redshirt freshmen quarterbacks Tayven Jackson and Brendan Sorsby. The Hoosiers have another quarterback battle on their hands this spring as the two redshirt freshmen and true freshman Broc Lowery battle it out for who gets the nod against Ohio State in the 2023 season opener.

Indiana head coach Tom Allen and the Hoosier offensive staff is not ready to make a decision yet.

“We are not ready to make that decision, but if something changed, we would. At the same time, there is so much to be done over the summer, there is so much to be done in fall camp, that it is really going to be difficult to make that decision prior to [summer], I would think. Especially when you have two guys that don't have a lot of experience in games.” Allen explained.

The Hoosiers do not need to rush a decision as the three quarterbacks have played in a combined four college games in their short careers. Also, if history tells us anything it’s that Allen and offensive coordinator Walt Bell will likely play it close to the vest as long as possible.

The Hoosiers have plenty of opportunities to figure out who will be the starter for the opener. IU has scrimmaged twice so far this spring and have two more scrimmages remaining, including one in front of fans on April 15th.

“We have two more scrimmages that I feel like we need to know better for that. I think there is back and forth, good days for one where one may take the lead, so I think they are both obviously young, they are both learning, they are both making plays. I think it is a process you go through, without questions. I just think we are not even ready to say who is in the lead at this point.” Allen explained.

Allen did touch upon both candidates for the starting quarterback position, praising their ability to work together despite competing for reps.

“The thing that sticks out to me is that they encourage each other. It's not like they are trying to be the other guy's adversary. I don't sense that whatsoever. They are teammates. I like the way they are working.” Allen said.

Both players are on the Hoosiers’ Leadership Council, which is impressive as a redshirt freshman.

Allen wants to create as much stress and pressure he and his staff can due to the inexperience of the quarterback room. Jackson and Sorsby will have to continue to establish themselves as leaders on the team,

“I think any time you come in new, you have to establish yourself in the weight room, establish yourself by how you are going to work, how are you going to practice, and how you handle when things don't go your way.” Allen said, “I think that is really what we are trying to create; as much stress and pressure on them, even as much chaos as we can on them, because that is the only way you are going to get them ready for a game.”

The Hoosiers do not need to rush the naming of a starter to appease the media or the fan base. With no clear leader of the group yet, they can take their time and evaluate the situation throughout the process.
