TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Wrap and Reaction: Tennessee 23 Indiana 22

TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Wrap and Reaction: Tennessee 23 Indiana 22

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Opponent: Tennessee Volunteers

Location: Thursday, January 2, 2020

Why They Played: The Hoosiers and Volunteers were selected to play in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. It was their second all-time meeting on the gridiron.

What The Game Meant: The game was a chance for the Hoosiers to cap of a fantastic season with a ninth win (that would match the program high), a win over an SEC team and end a 28-year bowl victory drought. However, none of those things happened and unfortunately, some fans will only remember the 2019 season for IU blowing a 22-9 late lead.

Points Left on the Field Doom Indiana's Offense in TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Collapse

The Hoosiers had every opportunity to secure their first bowl victory since 1991, but a series of missed opportunities resulted in another gut-wrenching loss that many Indiana football fans know all too well. Indiana’s offense generated its lowest total output since their 51-10 blowout loss against Ohio State. Playing without running back Stevie Scott, IU amassed just 76 yards on the ground, averaging a measly 2.5 yards-per-carry. Indiana’s passing attack generated just 227 yards on 20 completions, the third-lowest totals for yardage and completions this season.

The Indiana Hoosiers are, at last, playing in the CFB bowl game slate on Thursday night in Jacksonville, Florida. For the first time since 2016, the Hoosiers are heading to a bowl game. The TaxSlayer Gator Bowl will be an interesting challenge for Indiana for a few reasons. Tennessee has been playing some decent football this season and shouldn’t be counted out. The Volunteers are coming into this bowl game having won six out of their last seven, making for a surely confident team. TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Matchup to Watch: Indiana’s Secondary vs. Tennessee’s Receivers

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The matchup to watch, in our opinion, will be how Indiana’s secondary handles the Tennessee wide receivers. The Hoosiers finished the season ranked 10th in the Big Ten in pass defense by giving up 211.7 yards per game, and 231.6 yards per game against conference foes. On the other side, Tennessee did not lead the SEC in passing, they actually ranked eighth at 220 yards per game through the air. Where the Volunteers are impressive is with their personnel at the receiver position.
