2019 Indiana Football Position Preview: Defensive Line

2019 Indiana Football Position Preview: Defensive Line

Written by Evan McShane (@veryreasonable)

The Hoosiers return plenty of experience on the defensive line, but beyond the frontline there will be some questions about IU’s depth that need answered. Seniors Allen Stallings and Gavin Everett are set to anchor the defensive end spots. Stallings tied for the team lead in quarterback hurries last season while collecting two sacks, six tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Everett started 11 games last year and was the IU defensive player of the week against Michigan. Together, Stallings and Everett hope to make the most of their senior season.

The defensive unit as a whole has already made great strides the past few seasons under Tom Allen, current head coach and former defensive coordinator. In 2015, IU was 121st nationally in yards per game allowed, and in 2017 IU improved to 27th. Any successful defense starts from dominating the line of scrimmage. Today, we preview the defensive line.

Hoosier Walk-on Defensive Lineman Gavin Everett Surprised with a Scholarship by Tom Allen During Tackling Drill

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

As the Hoosiers entered the dog days of fall camp the sun beat down on the field as Tom Allen rallied the team around him in a circle with his bull horn. It looked as if the Hoosiers were getting ready for the 'Bull in the Ring' drill, a drill where the team circles up and two players try to shed the block or defend the attack of the other, a tough man's drill that already had the players take it up a notch.

Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 69 Days (Gavin Everett)

#69

The Hoosier Huddle countdown to kickoff has begun. A day under 10 weeks remains until the Hoosiers kickoff the 2018 season on the road against Florida International University. Today we will highlight number 69, Gavin Everett.

Gavin Everett (Redshirt Junior)

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 256 Pounds

Hometown: Greenwood, IN

Position: Defensive Line

Gavin Everett is an in-state player who transferred into the Hoosier program as a walk-on from Western Illinois in the spring of 2016. Everett saw no playing time in his one year at Western Illinois, but after sitting out the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules, was able to make an impact on the field last season for IU. Everett appeared in nine games and recorded 7 tackles. His best game came in the last of the 2017 season, on the road in the Old Oaken Bucket game against Purdue, in which he recorded two tackles and forced a fumble.

Everett attended Center Grove High School and despite serving as a team captain, earning all-state accolades, and being selected to the Indianapolis Star Super Team, was not highly touted as a recruit. At 255 pounds, up 35 from when he was in high school, he is a bit undersized for a strong side defensive end. Everett accepted Western Illinois’ scholarship offer, one of his few, but after being told he would have to redshirt and seeing no playing time, decided to try and walk on at Indiana. Being doubted in his abilities and size has only made him stronger and work harder; Everett fully embraces the ideal walk on attitude. During this year’s spring practices, Everett found himself taking first-team reps. Coach Allen mentioned how he had stood out to him after practices saying, “Mainly, Gavin is just a hard-nosed kid who works his tail off. He’s made himself a player. He’s tough, smart, and that’s something you can’t put a price on…he’s just so coachable. That’s one reason why he’s in the position he’s in right now.”*

Everett has two seasons remaining with the Indiana program and hopes to build upon the strong showings he had in the final games of the 2017 season. He hopes his heart, effort, and willingness to outwork will earn him starting time.

Top Five: Walk-on Players for the Hoosiers

Former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson emphasized the Hoosiers’ walk-on program and tried to bring in as many talented players as possible to help his team out, current head coach Tom Allen will try and do the same. The Hoosiers have had some pretty high success with walk-on players recently. Players such as Mitchell Paige, Luke Timian and Ricky Brookins to name a few have become regulars in the IU lineup the last few years. Today, we will look at the five walk-on players that can make an impact on the 2018 season.

IU's Defense Should Be Solid, But Details Need To Be Ironed Out In Fall Camp

IU's Defense Should Be Solid, But Details Need To Be Ironed Out In Fall Camp

Written By Alex Compton

The Spring Game came and went. Then it went some more then it ended. A 42-36 win for Team Crimson over Team Cream in overtime, it was full of ups and downs for both teams, but as is the case with both the philosophy remains that it is a glorified scrimmage that you can’t get too high or low about. Stats weren’t even kept and we didn’t go to the effort to keep track too much because that’s not what this game was about. It was about seeing where a team stood still over three months away from opening night kickoff when they take on Ohio State. With multiple key defensive players sitting out, it was hardly a true barometer of what IU will be in the fall, but there were some things worth taking note of. Just remember, Ohio State is still three months away. Indiana didn’t do anything tonight to take a lead or put themselves in a hole against the Buckeyes. With that said, let’s take a look at how the defense fared.
