Scores From Around the Nation: Week 7 IUFB Opponent Recap
/Written By: Nate Comp (@NathanComp1)
Everyone feeling rested? We’re back up and running after the bye week and now Indiana gets into the meat of their conference schedule. Cignetti will preach the one game at a time mentality, but there’s no harm in us as fans looking ahead at the schedule. Let’s take a look at how Indiana’s remaining opponents fared while the Hoosiers rested up and got healthy this past weekend.
Overall Opponent Record Remaining Schedule: 22-15
Nebraska (5-1): Last Week Bye
Just like it was against UCLA and Northwestern, the Hoosiers will face their next conference opponent off a bye week. Of course, this time Indiana is doing the same; but for the camp that has argued “Indiana’s schedule is easy”, it is never easy to take on a conference foe after a bye week.
This week’s matchup against Nebraska should have all the pomp and circumstance – Homecoming, Fox Big Noon Kickoff, Barstool College Football Show, a sellout crowd… an exciting test to see where Indiana stacks up.
Washington (4-3): Last Week Loss at Iowa 40-16
The highs and lows of a Big Ten season can be demoralizing and Washington felt the full effect of that the past two weeks. After handling Michigan at home the week before, the Huskies headed to Iowa as betting favorites and fell flat. Though they outgained the Hawkeyes, two turnovers and three second half failed fourth down conversions plagued any chance at stealing a victory on the road. Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson (which you’d be hearing a lot more about if not for Ashton Jeanty) added three more touchdowns on the ground, bringing his total on the season to 12 and securing Kirk Ferentz’s 200th Big Ten victory.
Michigan State (3-3): Last Week Bye
The Spartans rested this week before their matchup in East Lansing against Iowa this weekend – NBC/Peacock’s premier night game.
Michigan (4-2): Last Week Bye
The Wolverines were also off this past weekend. Coming off a road loss to Washington, they now travel to Illinois this weekend in CBS’s premier afternoon game.
Ohio State (5-1): Last Week Loss at Oregon 32-31
Oh, Ryan Day. In another primetime game against a top five ranked opponent, Day’s Buckeyes again fell short on the road in a thriller of a game. Will Howard threw two touchdowns and added one with his legs, but in a play that started with six seconds left on the game clock and trailing by one trying to get into field goal range, he confusingly scrambled for 12 yards and slid down… enough to get into field goal range, but time had expired. The Ducks stormed the field, while Ohio State heads to the bye week regrouping – Nebraska, Penn State, Indiana, and Michigan are all top of the conference opponents still on their schedule.
Purdue (1-5): Last Week Loss vs Illinois 50-49 (OT)
Well, has the offense at least turned the corner? The Boilermakers once trailed the game 27-3 in the third quarter before storming all the way back to force the game into OT. After scoring 16 points their previous two games combined, Purdue scored 40 in the second half. Ultimately, they saw their opportunity to steal a victory on the road against a ranked Illinois team and went for two in overtime, but Ryan Browne was sacked on the conversion attempt and the Illini escaped.
