The accolades keep coming in for the Hoosier passing attack on Monday. Hours after Indiana wide receiver Ty Fryfogle won his second consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week Award, the man throwing the ball, Michael Penix Jr., was named to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 List.

Penix completed 27-of-51 passes for 491 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-35 loss to Ohio State on Saturday. He has completed 118-of-201 (58.7) for 1,561 yards with 14 TDs and four interceptions, and he has rushed for a pair of scores through five games this season.

The Davey O’Brien Award is given nationally to the country’s top quarterback.

“In 2020, any player named to a Great 8 list during the season who was not previously named to the Preseason Watch List is added to the Midseason Watch List, which will be announced Tuesday, and will be eligible for the inclusion on the Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2020. Following the additions of Daniels, Eleby and McBride, 62 players now comprise the current midseason list.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrien.org.”
