Quarterback turned wide receiver Donaven McCulley slimmed down this offseason as he tries to become a more explosive player. McCulley was not overweight last year when he had about 10-percent body fat, but he has slimmed down to around seven percent. The physique change should help he be quicker.

“I feel like a kind of like dropping body fat and like bodyweight he just she really helped me to like being able to get out of breaks and things like that.” McCulley said after Tuesday’s spring practice.

McCulley is just over 12 months into his transition from quarterback to receiver. In 12 games a season ago McCulley made 16 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown with a long reception of 48 yards.

“This year, I'm way more comfortable you know, like even with the playbook alignments like what are receivers supposed to do?” McCulley explained of his second spring at the position.

McCulley will be under the tutelage of a new position coach as Adam Henry moved back to the NFL with the Buffalo Bills in the offseason. This year Anthony Tucker comes in after being the offensive coordinator at Utah State. McCulley’s first impressions have been positive of Tucker.

“he's gonna make sure you get get everything like right. He's gonna make sure you do everything correctly. He's gonna coach you extremely hard. He's not gonna let you be lazy or loaf, none of that.” McCulley said.

McCulley has kept his eyes on Cam Camper as a role model at receiver. While Camper has not participated in spring practice as he recovers from a knee injury.

“I like to watch Cam because he's kind of my size. So we're kind of move alike and I just tried to take like certain releases from him and certain moves” McCulley said.

Hoosier fans will have a chance to catch McCulley and the rest of the Indiana football team on Saturday, April 15th at the Spring Football Saturday event in Bloomington.
