Tom Allen’s first recruiting class as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers is beginning to take shape as the Indiana Hoosiers landed their second commitment of the day and their seventh overall for the 2018 class. For the third time in the past week, the Hoosiers dipped into the Land of Lincoln, this time nabbing well-regarded defensive end Gavin McCabe. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound three-star recruit chose IU over a list of impressive offers including Illinois, Iowa State, Arkansas, West Virginia, Washington State and several others. McCabe is a three-star prospect according to 247 Sports Composite rankings and the 15th best player in Illinois and the second-best defensive end in the state of Illinois and he joins recent commits Matt Bjorson and Nick Marozas as Illinois-natives in the class.

McCabe’s tape showed off his physical presence on the field and he has a good burst off the line of scrimmage. He has a good frame and reminds the Hoosier Huddle staff of former Hoosier Nick Mangieri. The Hoosiers loaded up on quick and long pure pass-rushers in the 2017 class in hopes of finding a pass-rushing specialist that wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. While McCabe may become just that, he will also be able to immediately help out as a run stopper that can set the edge on the outside.

McCabe announced his commitment on Twitter by sending a message that read:

Today I have made a decision that will shape my future both as a student and as an athlete. I will forever be grateful for the people who have helped me throughout this process. To my parents, thank you for always being there for me offering support and guidance. It has been a long journey getting to this decision and you have been by my side every step of the way. To Coach Dunne, thank you for being the best coach and mentor a player can ask for. You have pushed me to be the best that I can be both as a player and as a person. Thank you to all of the teachers and staff at Marist who have helped and guided me up to this point of making this great decision. Finally, thank you to all of the college coaches that invested their time to recruit me as a student athlete. I have dreamed about having this opportunity for as long as I can remember and I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to Indiana University!! GO HOOSIERS!!!!

The Hoosiers have had a great week on the recruiting trail and they now have four impressive defensive recruits, including two secondary players, a linebacker and a defensive lineman. Things are beginning to take shape for Tom Allen’s first recruiting class and the success this staff is having in Illinois is certainly a trend to keep an eye on.
