IU fans breathed a sigh of relief when it became official that Maurice Freeman was signed with the Indiana Hoosiers. Freeman, a rising star from Virginia, had attracted offers from a number of high-profile programs since recruiting to Indiana. An offer from Michigan had analysts wondering if Freeman would back out of his pledge to Indiana but the hard-hitting safety is now officially a member of IU’s 2021 recruiting class. As a junior, Freeman played both linebacker and safety and his play helped his high school to a 13-2 record and a semifinal appearance in Virginia’s state tournament. He is very athletic and physical and should fit perfectly in IU’s secondary, a group that has quickly become one of the Midwest’s best.

Freeman cited his relationship with Tom Allen as the reason he became a Hoosier. “It’s just the love with all the coaches,” he said in early December. “I talk to coach Allen almost every day. We have a great relationship and I haven’t had a relationship like that with a head coach. I get love from every coach on the staff.” The safety joins Larry Smith as safeties/defensive backs in the 2020 class and they should both have a chance to play in 2021. Tom Allen has shown a willingness to trust his young defenders and if they are good enough to see the field early, they will get their shot. That being said, IU is expecting every single member of this season’s excellent safety group to return. Look for Freeman to have a shot at substantial playing time beginning with the 2022 season.
