The Indiana Hoosiers earned the commitment of Jordan Jakes late Thursday night. The talented wide receiver is originally from McDonough, Georgia where he played for Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy. Jakes then moved for his senior year to Baltimore where he played for St. Francis Academy. “I know at St. Francis I’m going to have competition week in and week out,” Jakes said as he explained why he changed schools. Rated as a three-star recruit, Jakes stands 6-foot-4 and weighs in just a shade under 200 pounds. The big bodied, athletic wide out is poised for a promising career in Bloomington. Jakes is the first wide receiver to commit to IU this year, strengthening an already impressive 2019 recruiting class.
“They have been telling me that I could come in as a freshman and play, and that I could help change the culture,” Jakes told Hoosier Huddle. “My favorite time was just hanging out with the coaches.” Jakes was one of Indiana’s highest priorities during this recruiting cycle. A strong relationship with Tom Allen and wide receivers coach Grant Heard ultimately helped Indiana beat out over a dozen other schools. Jakes held scholarship offers from Michigan State, Iowa State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Rutgers, Virginia, and several others. He admitted, “Coach Head is one of the funniest wide receiver coaches I’ve met. He’s a really cool dude.”
Hoosier fans are used to having size at wide receiver, with guys like James Hardy ten years ago and Simmie Cobbs more recently. Jakes will carry on the tradition of having big, tall passing targets. “I would describe my [game] as versatile. I can move around the slot or outside,” Jakes said. “I’m working on making my routes look the same and keep the DB guessing.” Jakes will have plenty of opportunity to make an impact as soon as he gets on campus. For a tall wide receiver, Jakes moves remarkably well. He posted a 38.5-inch vertical leap and a 4.68 40 yard dash per hudl.com. The Indiana coaching staff are getting a great player on and off the field. Jordan Jakes can’t wait to get to Bloomington, and Hoosier nation can’t wait to have him.
