Curt Cignetti Staff Profiles: Offensive Coordinator Mike Shanahan

Written by T.J. Inman

Rod Carey’s role as the offensive coordinator for the Indiana Hoosiers was a short one. Curt Cignetti is bringing offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan from James Madison to Bloomington.

Mike Shanahan was hired at James Madison in December of 2018 and primarily worked with wide receivers before being promoted to offensive coordinator ahead of the 2021 season. In his first season as offensive coordinator, JMU set single-season passing records with 3,868 yards, 276.3 yards per game and 43 passing touchdowns. In 2022, the offense ranked in the top 30 in the FBS in six major categories: time of possession, yards per completion, scoring (37 ppg), pass efficiency, total offense and passing scores.

This past season, the offensive success continued as James Madison finished the season ranked 15th in points per game (34.9), 9th in completion percentage (69%), 14th in passing yards per game (297.3) and 15th in time of possession (32:20).

Shanahan has been with Curt Cignetti at IUP, Elon and James Madison. He was a wide receiver at Pittsburgh and earned second-team All-Big East honors in 2012 before playing briefly in the NFL and CFL and then moving into coaching.

Hoosier Huddle will have continued coverage of the Curt Cignetti hire and the busy offseason.
