Yes, it’s Monday (let out a groan). But in just three days the area in and around Memorial Stadium in Bloomington will be abuzz as fans descend on the college town for the Hoosiers’ home opener against the 2nd ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Today we look at defensive back Tyler Green and quarterback Peyton Ramsey.
Tyler Green (Junior)
-Height: 6’3”
-Weight: 190 lbs
-Hometown: Waldorf, Maryland
-Position: Defensive Back
Tyler Green was one of the bigger recruiting wins during the Kevin Wilson Era. Green is from national power DaMatha Catholic high school in Maryland. There He earned all-state honors and participated in the U.S. Army All-American Combine. He was rated the ninth best prospect in the loaded state of Maryland.
Green saw the field in eight games as a true freshman, including two starts. He made 16 tackles, one coming for a loss in 2015.
As a sophomore Green played in 11 games and started the Foster Farms Bowl in place of an injured A’Shonn Riggins. He made 10 tackles and broke up two passes. He struggled early in the year, but bounced back nicely and made some big plays when called upon in a reserve role.
This season, Green is expected to be an even bigger contributor off the bench (he’s behind Andre Brown in the week one depth chart). Green’s size gives him the ability to match-up against the opponents’ bigger receivers and contribute in the run game. If he stays healthy Green should set career-highs in all the meaningful stats in 2017.
Peyton Ramsey (Redshirt Freshman)
-Height: 6’2”
-Weight: 210 lbs
-Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio
-Position: Quarterback
Peyton Ramesy has secured the backup quarterback role in 2017 and is eying a run at the starting job in 2018. He had a tremendous spring game in April and impressed in fall camp.
Ramsey played his high school football for his father Doug at Cincinnati Eldor. He closed out his high school career completing 63.3 percent of his passes for 6,708 yards and 49 touchdowns. Ramsey is also a player maker with his feet rushing for 2,692 yards and 32 touchdowns on the ground.
Ramsey redshirted last season and impressed on the scout team and was named Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year.
Ramsey entered spring ball in a battle with Austin King, who has since transferred to Fordham, for the number two quarterback spot. Now, he will have to hold off a hard-charging Nick Tronti. Ramsey has won the back up spot and should get to see the field in 2017. IU actually will need him on the field to get some game experience. While Lagow, is clearly the starter and the leader of this offense, Ramsey can bring a different dynamic to the game Lagow can’t, his legs. I would expect IU to get Ramsey in as many games as possible and could even have a special package for the redshirt freshman like they did with Zander Diamont last year.
