#67
Summer is melting away and we are a third of the way done with our Countdown to IUFB Kickoff. In 67 days the Hoosiers will be ready to take the field against the Ohio State Buckeyes. For the past five seasons Dan Feeney has been a staple at 67, but he is now plowing the way for running backs in Los Angeles. Instead we will take a look at incoming freshman Peyton Hendershot, who will not be wearing 67, but will be a big part of Indiana’s future at tight end.
Peyton Hendershot (Freshman)
-Height: 6’4”
-Weight: 227 pounds
-Hometown: North Salem, Indiana
-Position: Tight End
Tight end hasn’t been a major playmaking position for the Hoosiers since Ted Bolser was manning the position a few years ago, but that will change under new offensive coordinator Mike DeBord. IU has five tight ends on the roster that are older than Hendershot, which should allow him to not be rushed into the lineup. However, the Hoosiers will lose two, if not three, of those players when the season ends. Hendershot will have his chance to make plays in for the Cream and Crimson in 2018 and beyond.
An in-state recruit, Hendershot played his high school football at Tri-West in North Salem, Indiana. He was an Indiana Football Coaches Association Top 50 player and earned All-State honors as a senior in 2016. He also won the award for the best tight end in the state. Hendershot was a playmaking tight end grabbing 67 passes for 896 yards and nine touchdowns during his senior season and finished his high school career with 157 catches, 2,170 yards and 22 scores.
Hendershot’s skills extended past the football field and into the gym as he averaged a double-double as a junior for the Tri-West basketball team. He was also an honor roll student and his brother Jake is a full-back for FCS power Illinois State.
