Countdown to 2020 IUFB Kickoff: 48 Days (Ty Wise)
/Written by Andrew Walker
We are more than half way through the 2020 countdown to kickoff and while there are many things still up in the air, we are powering on. Today’s featured player is Ty Wise and while wise represents day 48, he will be wearing number 37 when the season starts.
Name: Ty Wise
Position/Year: Linebacker / Freshman
Hometown: Carmel, IN
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 222 pounds
Ty Wise out of Carmel High School is one of Indiana’s most interesting and eager young freshmen. A 2019 Mr. Football finalist and an Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) position award winner (linebacker), Wise is poised and ready to be Indiana Football’s newest defensive sensation after some hard work. Ranked no. 7 overall prospect in Indiana, Wise was certainly cause for celebration when joining the Hoosiers.
After joining the Hoosiers in the spring semester of 2020, Wise has made sure to take his early start as an advantage. "Getting ahead was important to me," he said. "In the end, it will really help me out."
Wise hopes to be able to use his athletic capabilities to suit Tom Allen and Kane Wommack’s fast defensive style right off the bat. Last year at Carmel, Wise showed the Hoosier staff why he deserved to be on the defensive rotation. Totaling 112 tackles, 20 for loss, with six sacks. He also recovered three fumbles, intercepted two passes and forced two fumbles. "I love it. I love being able to show my athleticism and ability to play in space. I love man coverage. I know we do that a decent amount” Wise mentioned about how well he fits in a defense that prioritizes takeaways.
“I knew around halfway through Junior year, that is what I wanted to do, no matter where I played. The more I talked to the coaches they weren’t going to make or tell me to do it but they were saying if I wanted to, that they wanted me to come in early. As we got closer and closer, coach was just stressing how excited he was. Like, how far I was going to get ahead so it just really seems amazing to me” Wise said in an interview in February.
Kane Wommack has been a fan of Wise since High School, and the plan for this upcoming season is to move the lanky Freshman from Outside Linebacker to Inside Linebacker. Wise especially loves the move.
