2024 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 31 Days (Derin McCulley)

The 2024 Hoosier Huddle Countdown to kickoff continues with 31 days until the start of the Hoosier’s football season! Every day, we take a look at players on the current roster and highlight their roles in the upcoming season. With just about a month left for our countdown, today we are looking at wide receiver, Derin McCulley.

Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana (Lawrence North)

Position: Wide Receiver

Year: Redshirt Senior

Height/Weight: 6’1”/174 pounds

If the last name McCulley sounds familiar to you, it’s because Derin is the older brother to the star receiver for the Hoosier’s, Donovan McCulley. Like Donovan, Derin played quarterback at Lawrence High School. He played cornerback for the Wildcats as well. During his senior year, he attained 1,300 passing yards, 1,000 rushing yards, and eight touchdowns on offense while achieving four interceptions and a pick six on defense. These stats are what led to him being recognized for first team all-conference and his team’s MVP. Derin also lettered in track & field and was the conference indoor high jump champion.

After graduating high school in 2019, the 3-star defensive back recruit took his talent to Ball State where he didn’t see any game action his freshman year. After redshirting, he appeared in nine games at Ball State from 2020-2022. He mostly appeared on special teams and in the defensive backfield. In 2022, he switched positions from cornerback to wide receiver. In 2023, Derrin decided to transfer to his brother’s school, IU. He appeared in eight games for the Hoosiers where he logged the majority of his snaps on special teams.

Indiana’s wide receiver room runs deep, and Derin will provide some depth to the receiver position for the 2024 season. He will most likely appear on special teams for a large part of the season, but will try to shine in every moment he gets on the field.
