2022 Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 15 Days (Brendan Sorsby)

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The 2022 Hoosier Huddle Countdown has reached day number 15. Can you feel it? The excitement and anticipation of the upcoming season? Two weeks from today we will be on the eve of the 2022 Indiana Hoosiers football campaign and the opening clash with the Illinois Fighting Illini. Today’s profile feature is a newcomer for the Hoosiers and one there are great hopes for upcoming seasons: Brendan Sorsby.

Name: Brendan Sorsby

Hometown: Corinth, Texas (Lake Dallas High School)

Position: Quarterback

Year: Freshman

Height/Weight: 6’3”/220 pounds

The Indiana Hoosiers were in a unique position. They had a new offensive coordinator and a nearly entirely new offensive coaching staff after a miserable 2021 season required turnover on that side of the ball. Walt Bell and Tom Allen knew they wanted a veteran transfer quarterback and a freshman quarterback added to their recruiting class. Connor Bazelak answered the bell as the veteran transfer quarterback but the Hoosiers looked further southwest for their incoming freshman. The talent-rich area of Denton, Texas: Lake Dallas High School to be specific. Brendan Sorsby started his final two seasons at the high school and threw for 1271 yards with 14 touchdowns while rushing for 791 yards with 15 touchdowns during his senior season. Allen and Bell wanted a true dual threat quarterback and they found it in the 6’3” signal caller.

“I’m not one of those guys who is always looking to run first. I love throwing the football,” Sorsby told the Denton Record-Chronical in 2021. “But I do enjoy running if coach calls a play like that.”

Sorsby was named the Denton Record-Chronicle Quarterback of the Year in 2021 as he averaged 305.6 total yards per game. Sorsby also played baseball for Lake Dallas High School and his athleticism is apparent when you see his highlight clips. He’s well-built at 6’3” and north of 220 pounds with enough speed to keep defenses honest if he leaves the pocket. The biggest area of his game that will need improvement is consistency in being accurate, particularly with deep passes. He’ll also need to master Walt Bell’s offense but that will undoubtedly come with time. Sorsby enters IU behind Connor Bazelak, Jack Tuttle and Dexter Williams but his path to playing time is a clear one, if he can progress. Bazelak has this season plus one more while Tuttle is entering his final campaign. The long-term future of the position will be contested between himself and Dexter Williams (or someone that is not currently on the roster). He likely won’t see the field in 2022 but his skillset and fit with this offense makes him one to watch for the future.
