@mcm666 who are the executives getting money from if we all don't have jobs?  In order to have an economy you need producers and consumers.

For the record I think there would still be plenty of jobs for people and we would all just work less.

@snarlcakes there would still be consumers.  cost of production/services/insurance/flsa/osha/payroll taxes/workers' comp/ and on and on would all drop.  so i could sell with far less expenses to people who have money and would need fewer workers.  workers who are just cogs would be fcked and need basic income from the gov.  and we'd have a large class of welfare recipients couched as basic income and a smaller class of very rich people.  bad.  you want a large middle class.

that's my no economics education/training guess

@snarlcakes how did it happen in medieval times? There will be a small but fabulously wealthy group and a huge number of peasants.

When self-driving trucks become reality, do you think companies will say, "not going to use them, we need those jobs as consumers"?

Life without incentives or purpose is unsustainable.  Something will break this model.  Take it to the bank.

@mcm666 I'll try it this way.  Do you agree the only way AI takes over is by driving down prices?  The answer of course is yes or they won't take over.  Assuming that is the case then prices would have to drop significantly in that scenario.  I think the outcome will be we work fewer hours and there will still be plenty of serviced jobs for people.

Theoretically, AI could move so quickly almost all of us lose our jobs, but it would also mean prices would fall even faster and living standards increase even faster as well.

@arthur-dent we wouldn't be peasants if AI takes over and displaces most the jobs relatively quickly. It would be the opposite.  We all live like Kings.

I think this is a significant factor. The massive amounts of data storage and transmission AI- driven machines will require would consume huge amounts of energy.  Humans can do many tasks with virtually no energy consumption.  AI can’t.

Moreover, AI cannot come up with an idea why we need a new widget to make life better.  Only a human can do that.

@bradstevens how does AI disrupt society and simultaneously tip us into a depression?  If AI disrupts society, it means goods and services will be getting cheaper and people will need to work less to afford them.

The clunky "depression/econonomic tumult" was my lazy way of saying a downturn in economic production for some reason or a big, quick upheaval of "destructive capitalism." Basically, anything that leads to a lot of educated people deep in debt being out of work and without hope.

Just imagine: Karl Marx saw this coming 160 years ago.

@unclemark I can definitely see how it’ll raise revenue.  It’s horrible

@co-hoosier I was listening to a podcast last week where the person was saying imperfections and mistakes will become more desirable.  It would be proof a human performed the task or made the item.  I hadn't thought about that, but found it interesting.  I did agree with his overall point that there will be a shift back towards more human experiences.
