I'm sure you know about Beth Straw over at the middle school here in Carmel?

Dont agree. If those real scenarios actually exist, we need to trust agencies whose job is family issues to do their work.  Schools deciding for reasons of their own making to not inform parents of significant mental health issues does not make the situation better.  Schools educate, that’s it.

@unclemark Very true.  And it has!  Did you experience it with your kids' school?

No, but we had it on good authority it was happening in Washington IN, from an impeccable source... three times removed.

I don't understand the relevance. Are you implying that this lawsuit was fabricated by EdWeek? Or that it wasn't vigorously defended against?

I'm implying it's all ridiculous. All of it. From everyone.

@unclemark You'll be able to read the lawsuit soon enough if it hasn't already been filed.  Beth was very likely retaliated against for raising concerns that were backed by numerous teachers.  A meeting was set up and administration ambushed her.  Lawyers.  Dr. Tom etc.  She hired a law firm that specializes in this stuff so I'm sure much more will come out.

@unclemark It is but also predictable. I assume you went to IU too.  Think of the education students.  Liberal.  Faculty.  Liberal.  No different than journalism.  So when a lefty movement comes along of course teachers will get in line with it.  And journalists will report favorably on it.  Because that aligns with their beliefs anyway.  Ask kelley grads in finance.  Not so much.  The bottom line is they are our kids. Not the teachers.  If they want to be activists march down Main Street but when in school stick to the subjects and leave the kids out of it.

A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

Telling the parents about the gender identity of a student may not be in the best interest of the child.

Parents have never been perfect, far from it. That being said, haven't they always had a responsibility for their children and raising them? Since when did school assume such responsibilities? This would seem to go far beyond their primary purpose of "educating".

public education administration

You hit on two major problems, whether purposeful or not. One is the overreach of education sytems and administration and two is the excess administration that has economically burdened schools, increased politicization and created an extra layer between teachers and parents that I don't find helpful.

You wrote “gender identity”…what does that mean?

it means how an individual views and understands their own gender.

Do you really think a teacher should have the power to hide a child's gender identity from his or her parents?

I don't know. You're using loaded language. Try rephrasing the question. "Do you think a teacher should be required to report a child's gender identity to the parents?" That's really asking the same thing.

Yeah, I think the answer to your question is so obvious as to not need asking by any normal person.

I don't think it's obvious at all. Any of your kids teachers ever report to you how they are doing with their gender identity? My guess is no. And my guess is that's fine, because that's not really what we are talking about. What we are talking about is the hypothetical that if your child were presenting some form of non-conforming gender identity, you'd damn well want someone to tell you.

For reasons already expressed above, there's no guarantee that telling you is in the best interests of your child.

I don't know. And I'm not saying it's good for schools to assume the responsibilities of parents.

Politically, I’m guessing this an 80/20 issue in my favor. Legally, I’d bet a lot of money the SCt would uphold the trial court.  Practically, speaking, what are the odds it is not in the best interests?

Compare to trans surgeries and drugs. What are the odds it is in the best interests of a child to have hormones pumped through them or their breasts cut off? In those situations, I seem to remember the argument that how dare anyone assume a parent wouldn’t do what is in the best interests of the child.  Why doesn’t that same assumption apply here where the stakes are much lower?

Well, I for one never assumed those libs who seemed to desire a woke trophy more than an actual kid would always do what's best. But that's really irrelevant to my point, which was very specific.

Others did.

But for your reasonsing here, I think there are two problems. First, it has nothing to do with the policy. The policy did not say teachers could withhold the info if they thought it in the best interests of the child (which I would have a huge problem with since they aren't qualified to make that call--see below). Instead, it said:

the two challenged their district’s policy barring school employees from telling parents about a student’s transgender status without the student’s consent

Are we to assume school children know more about their best interests than their parents?  Elementary and middle schoolers?

Second, it leads to absurd results. Based on your rationale, it would be OK for a school to refuse to tell a parent if a child was sexually assaulted on school grounds or had told a teacher that she was raped if that teacher didn't think the parents would react well to the news.

Of course, it also violates the parents' right to raise their children in the way they see fit.  Again, we're in highly charged, contested political waters here. In these situations, the teachers should not trump the parents' beliefs.
