cool things about watching tennis:

51 week season

played on every continent, something to watch everyday at almost anytime

top players play each other every week

fit women moaning, sweating, grunting

Also, with FanDuel, always something to bet on!

I live in Cincy which has the top non-Grand Slam tournament every August. Incredible facility. They even added air conditioning to some of the outdoor seating. People rave about the event.

Only time I went I saw Michael Chang play. Tennis, even in person, just does not excite me. Great athletes and their shot making is incredible at times. But, I'd rather mow my lawn then sit through a 2-hour match. Just not my cup of tea.

On the other hand, I do remember Agassi's last hurrahs in the US Open. Based on Wikipedia I think I am recalling 2005 when he lost in the finals, but I also recall watching his last match in 2006. For me, it wasn't so much the excitement of the tennis match. Rather, it was the drama and human interest side of things. Plus, I always admired Agassi for the way he played.

But, it still creeps me out that he dated Barbara Streisand.

@mapletom yup.  so what's the story?  not popular with american kids?  i thought we were the mecca for tennis.  hell south fla is full of these academies.  all over boca, fort lauderdale, etc.

Not very pop, have to be rich to afford to get really good, then have to dedicate your life to it at a young age.  Limits the pool of athletes off the bat.

yup, and it’s gone the way of youth sports in general. Like most public basketball courts or baseball diamonds, you hardly ever see kids just goofing around on a tennis court anymore.  It’s all adults.  I guess kids these days are at home gaming and drinking lattes, waiting for mom to take them for a batting cage sesh at the performance center for $200/hr.

My last pro tennis rant: it’s an individual sport, like boxing/mma, so you get a front row view of some pretty broken people.  No hiding out there.  Most were shipped off to an IMG academy at 8 or some former Soviet sports institute in Eastern Europe at 4.  The lucky ones have parents who moved the whole family halfway across the country so they can be near some coach.  No pressure tho, honey, just play your best.  lol

Been watching some matches with my son.  It's so different than the last 15-20 years.  For so long, I became accustomed to the SuperPower era with Rafa, Federer, Williams, and then Djokovich.  Now, it's a bunch of players I've never heard of.

Current favorites to watch?  This Shelton guy seems interesting--has some reality show drama, dating Dennis Rodman's daughter.

The big two now are Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.  Sinner is a big German-looking, German-speaking Northern Italian and Alcaraz is a Spanish freak athlete.  They meet in the finals of most tournaments they’re in.  Because of them and the next tier of young guys, tennis should be good for awhile.

Just need an American male to rip of a bunch of majors. Serena Williams is why so many US women play tennis but need a larger-than-life dude to get Americans to watch again.  It really is an American sport.

alcaraz returns have been jaw dropping. He’s not as skilled as sinner in some ways, but his athleticism and creativity is wild.

@mapletom mercy. That has to be twenty years

yup, need a gen Z version of Andre Agassi to show up.  Flops hair around, listens to bad trap music w clownishly large head phones, takes winnings in crypto.  Gets an exhibition match on the WH lawn.  Nuff said.

I’d prefer a guy who drank Schlitz, smoked heaters while walking into a match, and was completely out of shape. Wore NB grillers to play in.  Took notes on his opponent in a little notebook he carried around. Had a nice horseshoe male-pattern baldness look going at 25.

I wonder if John Daly is too old to take up a new sport.
