@bradstevens Nice try with one of your frequent "gotcha" attempts, but I'm not disputing our leading role in AI research. We need to take the lead in implementing AI safeguards. To date, the US has prioritized rapid innovation and private-sector growth over federal regulation.

AI safeguards are going to come from AI research, not other dopes in Congress trying to craft federal regulations years out of date by the time they are enacted and that don't apply in the rest of the world. Again, you are exactly what you accused CoH of being: woefully uninformed.

And you're wrong about AI safeguards. They're not going to come simply from "AI research." AI safeguards won't be implemented until government officials, AI CEOs, AI researchers and ethicists finally collaborate and effectively address the existential threat that AI development presents.

I'm fascinated by MBA America vs. AI. All the shortcuts taken to boost the bottom line are vulnerabilities. Ultimately, civilization is precarious construct based on human trust. AI lives outside that construct and can only be let in by human choice, by humans choosing to trust AI. Man raced headlong to create nuclear weapons regardless of future consequences. Scientists create theory, engineers apply theory to life. I have long been astonished by the degree of trust required to have air traffic controllers working in unison to safely land our planes. The moment we trust that to AI, they can all come to a crash landing.

The only hope for elegant AI regulation is some type of SRO industry wide. Frontier Labs can test each other’s models for threats they understand. The workings of this are starting to take shape and I’d note they’ve done a good job self-regulating to date.
Congress should absolutely not have a role for the foreseeable future. Setting up some kind of FDA for AI with a mandate crafted by Bernie Sanders and AOC is insane and will guarantee stifled growth and a backlog of models waiting to be released.

Technological innovation makes you more productive, it has never been a source of happiness, and shouldn’t be blamed for lack of happiness.

Unclear parameters, sloppy programming, etc, are huge risks.
Those things are not a risk without a human calling the shots. AI cannot form an intent to destroy humanity.
