Gedankenexperiment:
Had the Jet Blue-Spirit merger gone through, the surging fuel prices today would have had one of three results:
1. The larger Jet Blue could better absorb the increased costs, helping save most of the jobs that were lost (absent the ones already lost as redundancies during the merger, of course), and kept market share steady.
2. The larger Jet Blue would be to financially shaky after taking on Spirit to do business as usual, and would be forced to trim services and payroll to some degree, which would result in an outcome roughly similar to what we are experiencing now, perhaps slightly less disruptive, or slightly more, depending on how it all shakes out.
3. The larger Jet Blue would be entirely unable to deal with the surge in fuel prices because of the added expense of carrying the old Spirit line, and would fold entirely, leading to a much more devastating disruption than what we are experiencing now.
Do I know which one would have happened? No, of course not. But I'd bet real, honest money (read: Bitcoin) that no one else in this thread is expert enough to be sure, either.
So maybe let's not use this as yet another excuse to go back and meaninglessly relitigate old political fights.
