Lawyers or anyone that knows.  What was the reasoning for blocking the merger with Jet Blue?  Or is the answer Elizabeth Warren is an idiot?

Soaring jet fuel prices due to the Iran war was the final nail in the coffin.

17,000 people now out of work.  Sad.

Spirit's restructuring plan assumed jet fuel costs of about $2.24 US a gallon in 2026 and $2.14 US in 2027, but prices climbed to about $4.51 US a gallon by the end of April, leaving the carrier unable to survive without fresh financing.

Offspring flew to Florida this Thursday on Spirit.  Woke up to news this morning and had to make alternate return flight plans.

Anyone traveling to Europe this summer might want to consider booking the return on a ship.

What a looming jet fuel shortage could mean for summer travel

A discount carrier going out of business will drive airfares up even more.

Routes in and out of Florida, Las Vegas, Detroit, New York/Newark, and Houston are expected to see the highest price increases, particularly for summer travel.

Everything was already so f'ing expensive.  This war is making things substantially worse.

@bulk-vh I read that some major carriers are offering stranded Spirit travelers $200 one-way fares.  Hopefully your family was able to jump on that.

It seemed inevitable after they blocked the merger.  I don't understand the reasoning for not allowing it.  From what I read JetBlue would have had around 9% of the market share if it went through.  I guess the big 4 control around 75% now for reference.   It seems they were trying to kill the business, but I don't understand why?  What am I missing?

No, it wasn't inevitable two and a half years ago when a federal judge blocked the merger, ruling that the proposed deal violated antitrust laws.  This was directly the result of the price of jet fuel recently doubling - - due to the war.

@bulk-vh Allegiant is out of belleville here.  i don't like flying to begin with so love the no connections.  the first time i flew allegiant like an idiot i was reading about plane crashes and engine failures and shit hte night before.  the airport is like one long building. way at the other end i see my ex's older brother who was a soccer buddy of mine.  i hadnt seen him in a good five years.   as he sees me and is walking towards me instead of waving he does the sign of the cross.  made a scary flight worse.  but yes we still have them.
