It was public knowledge that this company was arming Assad. Even after it was public knowledge…the Obama administration kept buying from them. I’m sure this was frowned upon by the same posters as well. Oh wait….

Russia exported arms to Syria for decades, including during the first Trump administration. We've secretly bought some jets, missiles and other weapons seasons over the decades in order to test them and develop defenses against and also to train against them. We also secretly bought some MIGs years ago (like 35 years ago) to prevent them from getting to Iran. We've also things like this for decades. What specifically are you referring to?

I’’m talking about taxpayer dollars flowing to this outfit that was supplying weapons that Assad used on civilians. It continued to flow even after it was public knowledge this was occurring. Did Congress push back on this happening? Did the Pentagon continue to contract with them? Did they look for alternatives? Mi-17 helicopters…used for what?

For decades, as I just pointed out. One thing we did which was unusual was to buy Hind Helicopters for Afghanistan because they are much more simple to maintain than US helicopters and Afghans were familiar with them. That started under GWB and continued under Obama and Trump.  We don't routinely buy weapons from Russia, ours is the best in the world so we only do it to keep tabs on their technology for the most part, and this outfit is just Russia's export company.

WSJ is now reporting the Starshield slowdown was at Musk's direction.

Fitzpatrick is right.  This disgraceful act, which resulted in casualties, calls for a full investigation.

Did assad turn around and give money to Iran to purchase weapons to target US assets?

In the last week, we shut off Starlink to Ukraine, stopped giving them early warning of strikes, and now fund the Russian (and Iranian) military. Look at the whole picture.

The contract was with Russian state arms dealer. I’ll answer the questions you didn’t. Congress pushed back. DOD did not look for alternatives. Helicopter purchases stopped after June 2013.

https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2015/11/25/2015-30058/modification-of-iran-north-korea-and-syria-nonproliferation-act-measures-against-a-russian-entity

It took all of 2 months to decide to continue to paying for maintenance, repair, sustainment.

So..yes , we continued using taxpayer funds that went to the outfit supplying weapons to Assad. He, in turn, used them on civilians. And we knew that.

History is messy. Trump sells out Ukrainian civilians. Obama sells out Syrian civilians. One will receive a lot of well earned press. The other was mostly quiet

Oh…I’m looking at the whole picture. Others are blinded by Trump. Some think Europe quit buying Russian diesel…wrong. And on and on. Trump has screwed the pooch in Iran because he’s soft and wants people to like him. Also…he’s been terrible this term. I can admit that. Obama was terrible his second term. Biden was terrible. You won’t find many Democrats signing up to make those statements

Eh, all presidents are involved in plots and machinations like this.  Unsavory stuff but that is the job.  All presidents have made decisions that have led to innocent people getting killed.  That is also the job.  They all have blood on their hands.

What exactly does that have to do with this admin's approach to the war in Ukraine?  They've been spending 2 years trying to convince us Ukraine is equally at fault.  it's just the most bizarre shit.

Yeah, there's no way Musk does that unilaterally. Musk may have given the direction, but he did it on Trump's order.

@unclemark there seems to be a lot of confusion if starlink, starshield, or both, are throttled for Ukraine. If starshield, Musk has no power. If starlink, it could be either.

Ok. So when was the last time a US president hobbled the military communications and defense capabilities of a partner country that is fighting for its life?

This is just one more reason why the "Trump is awful, but so were the last several presidents who preceded him" argument is inane.  Trump's actions, in countless instances, are unprecedented and uniquely egregious, and will cost the party bigly on 11/3.

No way he doesn't have root for both.
