The best of all the Star Trek captains

Not so fast, to adjudicate this we must first discuss who brought us 7 of 9 and whom brought us Deanna Troy, with pictures and then decide who was the better of the two. I think they both are pole worthy.

Let us not forget T'Pol from Star Trek Enterprise.

I loved Star Trek and used to watch it with my dad, all the time.

But Patrick Stewart, as a person, beats Patrick Stewart, the actor, in his impact in my mind.

Stewart is a survivor of a home with domestic violence.  He saw his mom beaten many times, and dealt with the shame of coming from a home like that his whole life.  In the mid 2010s, he spoke out and revealed what he went through. He became an advocate against domestic violence.

At around the same time, I started volunteering with an organization that helps adult men heal from who were having problems in life, many the result of past traumatic events.  Many of those events came from their childhood.  For nearly every one of them, shame about what they went through--through no fault of their own--was a huge component.  From working with those men--and experiencing it myself, firsthand, which is why I started volunteering--it is difficult to overstate how brave Stewart was to step up and tell his story.  Unlike for women, when men tell stories like this, the response from fellow men is very mixed, with many men uncomfortable with such stories and others who can't deal with emotions and who label the survivor as weak or wanting to play the victim or worse. Stewart knew this and did it anyway.

The value of a public figure talking about these experiences is impossible to quantify.  But from my experience, I've seen grown men in their 60s or 70s weep while listening to others reveal things like this. Some hide what happened and their shame for their whole lives and the catharsis from hearing someone you admire or identify with is very powerful.  No doubt a lot of people experienced that from listening to Stewart tell his story.

A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
