My brother died of a sudden heart attack in his late 50s.  He was an MD, in top shape, and he ran marathons.  He ate healthy, no smoking, no drinking, some stress with being an MD, though he was a pathologist and so he had a pretty regular schedule. Never got to enjoy a day of retirement. He apparently saw no warning signs, despite his training to know the warning signs.  It doesn't always make any sense.

My other brother died at 71.  That was a long and lingering death (cancer, with the end hastened by COVID) and the way less desirable way to go, IMO.

Those deaths and my parents both dying of cardiovascular disease (Mom @ 77, Dad at 85) changed my thinking about diet and exercise and about NOT working past 66 or 67.  Not going to do it.  I want to enjoy retirement, and with my family history, I am very unlikely to see 90 so it's time to see more of the world while I can.  46 or 50 states visited, 5 of 7 continents.  Time to go places.  Though I'm still ~4 years away from 67. I could afford to retire earlier but I do enjoy the projects I have going on (2 new grants funded this year)

Sorry to hear about your brothers and parents.

I'm glad it's changed your perspective. I'm with you. I don't want to work any longer than I feel like I need to. There are two guys I work with who are in their 70s. One of them is 77 and I still have a weekly meeting with him. I don't know why he still works, to be honest with you. His three sons are scattered across the US and two of them have their own kids (his grandkids). His wife has been retired almost 20 years. At this point I think he's worried about what might happen if he stops, though I think people have given him hints. I've never wanted to insult him so I haven't told him this directly, but if I'm not retired for AT LEAST 12 years by the time I'm 77, something is seriously wrong.

@myteamisonthefloor It’s awful for friends and family, but good for the person. Happened to a friend of mine. We were texting all through the Rose Bowl. I texted him the next day to see if he was going to Peach Bowl and didn’t hear back. Later that day, found out why. Graham was young, compared to many of his cohorts.

I can't imagine working at 77.  I plan to retire when I'm 50 hopefully.  Want to get around $4M saved and then I'm tapping out.  Life is too short to waste it in an office.

@dbmhoosier $4 mil at just 50 won’t be enough.  You could live to 90

Bullshit.  That's a $160K a year if you simply put it in a high yield savings account.  House and cars are paid off. College accounts fully funded.  Property taxes are low.  We don't spend much either.

@dbmhoosier 40 years.  Lunatic socialist Dems.  Market.  I’d feel good about that at 70. Not 50

@dbmhoosier Dems are psychopaths.  You get a couple rounds of open borders. Mamdanis and Cori bush and AOC and the rest. Dems  will steal your money without thinking twice to fund their garbage.  Robinhood gov for a decade plus  will dwindle dough

Back to the thread...  thoughts and prayers to the entire gay community on their loss. Lindsay kept a great many young men gainfully employed.  Allegedly. Now I guess they are free of their non disclosure agreements?

Not the first time you’ve shown yourself to be homophobic by attempting to insult someone by insinuating they’re gay.  I don’t give two shits about making fun of dead people, but keep on bigoting…

He's not a bigot.  Serena Williams is his neighbor after all.

Google Lindsay Graham ladybugs.

This is well-known. I don’t think any less of him at all for being gay, othar than that he did have some hypocritical political stances. Overall I admired the man, a McCain ally and moderate,  right up up until he sold his soul to MAGA a week or so after Jan 6 in that famous Mar a Lago visit

You’re taking shots at him for being gay.  Own it…
