9 years ago we were all promised a secret, mysterious, but surely wonderful new health care plan to REPLACE Obamacare, immediately after repealing it.  What happened?

Promises made, promises broken...

How rare . . .

No clue.  Do they always sign deals with China?  I strongly suspect Argentina is still going to sell commodities to countries around the world

In September, China bought no US Soy, we once were their largest supplier. In October they announced a massive deal with Argentina. That leaves American farmers cut out and angry.

I don't mind helping countries, including Argentina. The funny part is Trump doesn't give a damn about the Argentinian people, he just wants to prop up a fellow bro. That doesn't seem nearly as helpful to me.

@arthur-dent you're clueless if you think they did it to help out a fellow bro.  Whatever that means.

@larsiu Dems and Dem leadership aren’t as smart as pubs.  Just reality at this point.  But Trump is vapid.  Why are my groceries so high!!  How much is health insurance going up?!!   Trump isn’t making things cheaper!  He promised he would.  On a loop.  Nothing else

task hickory and his brethren to go to stores and find something more expensive each week. Cars. Wood. Oreos. Whatever.  And fixate on it

Yea, those pubs are so smart that they removed their spine and chopped off their balls in their fealty for trump.

and yet HH they control all three branches of government and most of the statehouses across teh country.

the dems need to message better and part of that message includes a departure from identitarian and intersectional politics.

@larsiu it’s not like Dems are devoid of ammo.  They just focus on the wrong stuff. This is where having nyc cali Chicago set the narrative undermines Dems imo

@mcm666 Democrats are devoid of good ideas besides give away free shit to certain groups of people.  It's why everything is about Trump.

The problem today is all their spending and terrible ideas have caught up to them.  Obamacare was sold as the Affordable Care Act and sounded like a great idea to people who don't understand how economics work (aka 90% of the population). It predictably did not make costs more affordable and has also morphed into a subsidy for wealthy old people.  Amy just said the quiet part out loud.  Vote for us and we will give you "free shit". It's great in the short term for votes, but terrible for society overall. This is how socialism always ends up by the way.

@snarlcakes fax dog. Give away free shit. Take money from people who have it. Then race-bait and play the victim card.

For f#ck sake @mcm666.  We're now subsidizing people's healthcare in their 50s and 60s so they can retire early and contribute nothing to the economy?  All while (checks notes) were 37 trillion dollars in debt.  I'm done.  Come visit me and my beautiful Bitcoin in El Salvador.  I mean what the f#ck🤷🏻‍♂️  It reads like a Babylon Bee article.  @bradstevens this is why I am relentless and can't stand governments.  Morally this is repulsive and is just flat out theft.

The replies on X are brutal. As they should be. I don't know who came up with "So, the GOP is hurting regular Americans, does any prominent Democrat have an idea for highlighting something that makes the GOP's case for them?" But this is why Democrats lose elections. A dead squirrel could come up with better messaging than this.

well, Obamacare was a sloppy middle ground which was always doomed ot fail. Shit or get off the pot.

Healthcare costs rise b/c there were two many cooks in teh kitchen from payor perspective. Too many middlemen. Single payor puts costs in check. Yes, I'm aware of the "stifle innovation" argument. I also don't agree with it.

Defense spending is single payor. Do we spend too much. Many would say yes, few would say it's stifled innovation.

Agreed. Put intersectionality in the rearview. Be concerned about the new offshoring (AI/automation). Focus on reducing health insurance costs (single payor) and healthcare access.

Make SNAP/Medicaid leaner (means testing, tie it to finding work). Stay away from culture issues (or at least don't lead with them, lead with access to birth control, etc. instead of focusing solely on abortion) and for God's sake, COMPROMISE occasionally (both sides obvs).

“if Congressional Republicans refuse to extend the enhanced tax credits.”

The Democrats put in the sunset date because this benefit was part of the  Covid crisis mitigation.  Obamacare, as the Democrats designed and intended it, included this trap for the early retirees.  This was part of the debate and it was a well known problem. Fixing this wasn’t in the original plan, what has changed?

Much of the criticism of Obamacare that many of us had here when it was being formulated and passed has come to pass. The CBO estimates of the cost, or lack thereof, WERE false because Democrats put in crap designed to get a favorable CBO estimate that they KNEW would never happen, and they have not happened. The "Cadillac Tax" never happened, just as predicted. Many other taxes didn't happen. The "fine," actually tax for not purchasing insurance went away (it was deeply unpopular). Costs of healthcare did not stabilize or go down, and on and on. It was always going to be a mess, and it is. Solving, or at least improving, healthcare cannot be doing on a purely partisan basis as Obamacare was. It's going to take a bipartisan effort - which doesn't give us a lot of hope either.

@larsiu you're essentially arguing that command economies are better than free markets.  They aren't.  The only argument for single payer is we're nice people and want to provide healthcare for everyone.

@bradstevens the GOP needs to get 60 votes and repeal Obamacare and help out the 70% of the population getting screwed by it.
