Statement of Rev. Robert Dowd, President, University of Notre Dame:
"Pope Leo continues to proclaim the Gospel of Christ by upholding human dignity and serving as a tireless advocate for peace. His message transcends partisan political divisions in this or any country, and I am deeply grateful for Pope Leo's inspiring example.
"I ask members of the Notre Dame community to pray for peace and work together with all people of goodwill to build a more just and humane world."
Trump has repeatedly attacked the Pope this week and now two of Trump's disciples are piling on. Both identify as Catholic.
First, Vance. On Monday, he said that the pope needs to stay in his lane by sticking to "matters of morality." Yesterday, he continued lecturing the pope, and this time said the pope "should be careful" about "matters of theology." Sorry for stating the obvious, but matters of morality and theology are clearly within the pope's wheelhouse. It's the essence of his job. In fact, traditional Catholics view the pope as the ultimate authority on matters of faith and morals.
Maybe Vance should stay in his lane. Or is he thinking this will help sales for his upcoming book, probably loaded with self-righteousness, about his conversion to Catholicism.
Now it's Tom Homan going after the pope, stating "I wish they (the Catholic Church) would stay out of immigration because they don't know what they're talking about." Someone needs to tell Homan that the gospels have multiple references to the treatment of migrants ("strangers," "aliens" and "sojourners"), and it's an issue with moral implications. Someone needs to tell both of them that Catholic teaching is that the pope is the Vicar of Christ on earth.
The arrogance of these guys is astounding, but it's further evidence of the loyalty test - - kneeling at the altar of Trump before all else.

Where do you stand on abortion and homosexuality?

I don't know why that matters. I have opinions but I'm not a moral authority. Convince me why that's relevant, particularly in the context of this discussion.

The Christian faith seems to be on your mind a lot recently. Just seeing if you are the devout Christian that you accuse Vance and others of not being. Surely you’re not a hypocrite on the topics.

Irrelevant to the discussion.

Why would he have to even be religious at all in order to point out that someone is a fake Catholic? has Butch tried to tell the pope to "stay in his lane"? I must have missed it.
He's trying to max out on committing the sin for a single confession on Sunday.Today was the third straight day Trump went after the Pope.
"I cannot think of any parallels, at least coming from Western Christian majority countries, of such pointed and public attacks on the Pope." - Andrew Chestnut, Virginia Commonwealth University's Catholic studies chair.
His repeated attacks are damaging the party. When does MAGA have an epiphany and decide "enough with this POS?"
Trump attacks Pope Leo XIV, risking support from Catholic swing voters
Where do you stand on abortion and homosexuality? Are you proposing the former to solve the latter?
I believe @spartans9312 point is that those who are pro choice and pro gay marriage should hold their tongue before criticizing the friction between Vance's political beliefs and the messaging currently coming out of the Vatican.
Here's the difference though, you could easily find biblical justification for Trump's actions In iran and wrt immigration. You won't be able to find that with abortion or gay marriage.
Trump's recent attacks on Leo are of course, horrible, you can't attack the Pope the way you would Chuck Schumer. And the thinly veiled attacks on this administration from Leo, capped off with the veil completely dropping with that sideshow on 60 Minutes on Sunday is also horrible. Trump had understandably had enough. Both unprecedented, both parties need to stop.
There's nothing wrong with what Vance and Homan said, they showed the requisite respect for papacy. The infallibility of the Pope does not extend to matters political and when he wades into politics as he has knowingly done, he is as worthy of criticism as anyone else.
Telling the Vatican that they should not argue that the followers of the Prince of Peace should also favor peace is... well, batshit crazy

We understand spartan's point but it's still irrelevant as no one is telling the pope to stay out of the abortion and gay marriage topics. Also, no one claimed to be the perfect Catholic nor that they agreed with every opinion the pope may or may not have.
You can claim any topic to be political (even thoughts on gay marriage and abortion). Telling the pope to stay in his lane is just ridiculous.

I'm sure the Christian faith has been on many people's minds lately. How could it not be? Hegseth's public prayers. Vance wearing his faith on his sleeve. Paula White-Cain, on Good Friday, comparing Trump to Jesus. Trump's disgraceful rant on the holiest day in the Christian calendar. His repeated attacks on the Pope. Vance and Homan piling on. The AI image, posted by Trump, of Trump as Jesus.
So YOU get to decide whether I'm a "devout Christian," based on your two-issue test? That's not happening.
I don't even know what "devout Christian" means but, in any event, my personal views, as I said earlier, are irrelevant to the discussion.
Trump is working overtime to discredit and diminish the pope, a good and holy man whose entire adult life has been spent in service to others. Trump, on the other hand, is an amoral and evil individual whose entire adult life has been spent in service to himself, so his attacks on the pope aren't inconsistent with the dirtbag he has proven to be. But for two high-profile Catholics to pile on, almost certainly because of Trump's disdain for the pope and their unwavering fealty to Trump, is despicable.
