@jdb my mom was so into the entertainment book. My God. In the history of mankind having a human at a restaurant rifling through that big fucking thing to find a coupon has to be the low point
100%... my parents planned our activities (food, events, etc.) around that book. Imagine the power Entertainment had, and didn't realize! Literally an entire family and extended family who lived their lives around what coupons were being offered!
Can you imagine the shame of strolling into McDonald's in the 90s in a middle- or upper-class suburb, where there was already a $1 menu?
My wife used to get that every year. She used it extensively when she took our kids out to eat or activities. I was too embarrassed to use it. Same with coupon shopping @ the grocery. I scoffed at it, thought she exaggerated how much she was saving. I got over that pretty quickly when in my early 40's I started doing the cooking, shopping for it, and meal planning for the house (carry out, delivery or home cooked). Several $200-300 weekly shopping trips later I was like "fuck that" and jumped into that frugal life with both feet. I literally save 50% or more on grocery shopping by keeping a rotating working pantry/freezer, reverse meal planning, using chain grocers loyalty shopping card & digital coupons and stocking up on sale, close out or clearance items. Same thing with using online ordering apps/websites from fast and fast casual carry out food and snagging their online exclusive deals. It's been nearly 2 decades and I am still doing it.
At this point in my life I no longer "need" to, but hell why would I throw money away. Of course, there are still times when I am shopping for something specific or want that perfect meal out that money is no object. But for the day to day this and that, I'm a cheap bastard first.
