@oneeyedundertaker who exactly FORCES their oppressive culture upon us? Why does being proud of their previous country ( flying flags) mean they hate the US?
It’s an indication that their allegiance lies with their country of origin, not this one & that they identify with that country, not ours. If they are here illegally, it also indicates that they are willing to disregard our laws & are not interested in being a US citizen, just someone he lives here & wants to benefit economically. I prefer to see people living here that would put the interests of our country & citizens before their country of origin.
I don't like that look. You're idealizing the past. There's been an assimilationist bent to American public opinion for a very long time. Have you never heard of the Native American Party of the mid-nineteenth century, depicted in Gangs of New York? Far and Away? Or read the quote ascribed to Teddy Roosevelt? My grandmother was born in 1901 in Shelbyville Indiana. Her Shelby County birth certificate is written in German. Her marriage certificate ~1921 was also written in German. People were not always so adamant that immigrants shed every aspect of their heritage when coming here. She was proud to be an American but also proud of her family's German roots.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. If he tries to separate from the rest of America, then he isn’t doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns out people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polygot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” — from a January 3, 1919, letter to the President of the American Defense Society, in Theodore Roosevelt and His Time Shown in His Own Letters, Vol. II (edited by Joseph Bucklin Bishop; published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1920)
Do you think it helps when people are trying to go through the proper channels and getting picked up at their hearings... doesn't that send a message that you're gonna get picked up either way so might as well delay it?
But I can see the argument for why they do it--they've broken the law and they don't get immunity by touching home base (courthouse).
Huh.@aloha-hoosier https://twitter.com/hodlmagoo/status/1957263421088444463?s=46
Theoretically immigration could help with the debt issues, but it would require a lot fewer immigrants and they'd need be high earners. We have had a shit ton of immigration the past 50 years and our fiscal situation has only gotten worse. Immigration isn't fixing our debt issues.

How accurate are those numbers? More likely and over or under count?
@bradstevens I've seen similar numbers other places on X and internet. I always assume the numbers are undercounted, but I'm not sure.

Then you might as well say capitalism itself is Ponzi scheme?
What are the forms of government and economic systems that don’t need growing populations?
if you wanna go 100k feet up for a view, to the level of geopolitics, you need a growing population. You need a wide base. You need above-replacement-level bodies to fill your institutions and businesses. Need scientists to develop your tech and soldiers to defend your interests.
Above all, you need a growing young population to embrace new ideas, to more easily adopt new modalities and advanced tech. Young brains who aren’t obsessed with fighting the last stupid war.
Elon and the tech bros got this part right.
I find that argument compelling.@bradstevens I've seen similar numbers other places on X and internet. I always assume the numbers are undercounted, but I'm not sure.
If it was super simple to assimilate people from disparate cultures, different religions, etc., it theoretically wouldn't matter. But it's not that simple, and there probably is a limit to the number of people we can assimilate at once without causing a lot of strife. Not sure how you go about calculating or even ball parking that number, but this is useful information.

Flying another countries flag is an indication their allegiance lies elsewhere? Huh?
I think your observations are better suited for nation-states. In terms of "forms of government," for example, I'd argue that democracies and republics suffer from too large populations.@aloha-hoosier https://twitter.com/hodlmagoo/status/1957263421088444463?s=46

As for your last paragraph, I'm not sure that tracks. The population of Gaza is pretty young, right? They seem to be fighting the last few stupid wars in very stupid ways and are still embracing the same old, stupid ideas.

you’re not a very successful government of any form if you can’t compete with or defend yourself against your rivals. That takes population growth.
When has Gaza ever functioned like a real country?
Think of it this way, what if every kid born today got a Boomer brain? 🤯
Youre taking a very small subset of legal immigrants and basically claiming they represent all legal immigrants. That’s like taking the J6 rioters who damaged the people’s property and violently assaulted the Capitol Police and saying they represent the entire MAGA movement.@oneeyedundertaker who exactly FORCES their oppressive culture upon us? I might prefer Boomer brain to Millenial brain, though.

They are waiting until they are already done with their hearings and then arresting them, no matter the outcome of said hearing.
We have a Justice system that people are trying to use the correct way, and they're still getting punished. I think it will hurt the process in the long run.
@boogie I’m terribly hungover but what am I missing? What’s wrong with this? Sounds smart
@mcm666 I think we're going to see more people not go through the proper channels when people are getting picked up who are trying to do the right thing.
Why are we punishing people that are trying to do this immigration thing correctly, the way the courts have them set up?
Hope your hangover was at least a good time last night.
