I have never lived in Shelbyville, though, After getting married, my grandmother moved a bit south.

@bradstevens considering the amount of time you spend posting, reading and watching tv….I’m a little concerned about your marriage.  Probably more than a few we could say this about…

I spend more time listening to podcasts than TV.

But don't worry about my marriage: I've been taking notes from Joe_Hoopsier and McMurt.  I'm all set.

@mcm666

Unfortunately my Dad gave it to my oldest brother, who then gave it to his daughter (my oldest niece). She is not that into history. I just texted with her and she is heading to Ireland. I had to inform her about another branch of my family from Ireland, on my Mom's side.

The thing was a pile of boards in my grandma's barn then my Dad reassembled it. Amazingly the latches still worked, and the wood was interesting, clearly not local origin.

It is is about as big as carry-on luggage today. Smaller than the cedar "hope chests" you often see. My great-great-grandma Margaretha (Margaret, once she was in the USA) traveled light.

@bradstevens that's where he earned his living.  on the backroads.  knowing what had enough meat left on the bone to turn and what didn't.  he had no knuckles left.  from slipping with wrenches on hard surfaces.  man i miss him.  he was the real deal.  and he sure hated my pickers guys

@shooter don't restore it etc.  just repair it with the minimum.  that's real neat.  i love those things and i love them as a decorative office piece.  you should text her and let her know that it doesn't have just sentimental value to your fam but it's a keepsake for myriad other reasons.  people don't know.  my grandfather gave me a legit old school lionel train set.  was amazing.  not the little more recent iterations but the big old cars.  i was just thinking the other day i'd love to show that to my minion who is obsessed with trains.  my aunt asked my dad if she could borrow it when i was a teen then she fucking sold it.

My grandmother was born in 1901 in Shelbyville Indiana.  Her Shelby County birth certificate is written in German. Her marriage certificate ~1921 was also written in German. People were not always so adamant that immigrants shed every aspect of their heritage when coming here. She was proud to be an American but also proud of her family's German roots.

You're idealizing the past. There's been an assimilationist bent to American public opinion for a very long time. Have you never heard of the Native American Party of the mid-nineteenth century, depicted in Gangs of New York?  Far and Away? Or read the quote ascribed to Teddy Roosevelt?

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. If he tries to separate from the rest of America, then he isn’t doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns out people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polygot boarding house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.” — from a January 3, 1919, letter to the President of the American Defense Society, in Theodore Roosevelt and His Time Shown in His Own Letters, Vol. II (edited by Joseph Bucklin Bishop; published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1920)

Do you think it helps when people are trying to go through the proper channels and getting picked up at their hearings... doesn't that send a message that you're gonna get picked up either way so might as well delay it?

Why do you think importing cheap low skilled labor is beneficial overall for working class Americans?

Legal immigrants don’t only do cheap and low skilled labor. My neighbors certainly don’t. We don’t have the population growth necessary to sustain SS and Medicaid. We need immigrants to help with this problem.

Theoretically immigration could help with the debt issues, but it would require a lot fewer immigrants and they'd need be high earners.  We have had a shit ton of immigration the past 50 years and our fiscal situation has only gotten worse. Immigration isn't fixing our debt issues.
