I believe that government works best and more honestly when it supports its citizens. A government should be of the people and for the people. I'm not suggesting that nations shouldn't be charitable to others but I am stating that foreign aid should be given only when doing so is supported by a strong majority of the people.

I don’t mind at all.  Yes, but not of the evangelical variety.  Grace is a gift, grace isn’t something one earns.

This is fun. Let’s analyze your question. ‘Twill be enlightening. 

First we have “the people’s government” clearly indicating the people own, manage or control the government. 

Immediately followed by “serve its people” clearly indicating the government owns, manages or controls the people. 

That’s the damn problem with nationalism. The demagogic nationalist comes to power by convincing the citizens they are important. Then, as soon as he takes power, he flips the script…

We need more nationalism, not less of it.  Otherwise hate will flourish and we are finished.

Nationalism means loyalty, cohesion and respect for people and culture.  I’m a nationalist and practice nationalism.  I’m proud to say so. 

Those who deride nationalists are the same who mock and ridicule others just cause they believe the wrong things.    

Your post kind of starts in the right direction but ends up in the wrong place. 

For you as an individual certain concepts guide you to be a civil citizen. This is likely true for the large majority of fellow Americans. You’re lumping those concepts together and calling them nationalism.

Trump, as a nationalist politician, corrupts your pristine concepts to intentionally sow hatred in the citizenry and effect his racist aims under the guise of protecting our borders. 

Not just Trump. Our politics follows a similar MO. Citizens are spectators of the sport, picking their team, while politicians engage in the ruthless fostering of hatred.

”Nationalism” as a political movement in our American society is a losing proposition because too many spectators get duped by the demagogue du jour.

Trump probably is a nationalist politician.  His personality flaws prevent him from acting like it.  Positive nationalism has been around for decades, even centuries. If a demagogue du jour affects how people see nationalism, said people have pretty weak principles and minds.

says you.  I think not.  This is as succinct statement of nationalism you can find. There are scores of others.
