I define nationalism as patriotic pride, a desire to be self-governed, and the desire to put the interests of a nation's citizens first.

America's founding fathers were nationalists. So was Abraham Lincoln. So was Mahatma Gandhi. So is every fan at the Olympics and World Cup.

Does anybody have a problem with this concept

Yes, because you are confusing nationalism with statism/patriotism. They are not the same thing.

I need to correct myself. Not every fan cheering on their nation's team is necessarily a "nationslist", but they are certainly engaging in nationalist behavior.

Many throw out the term "nationalist" and then complain about it. Why?

Nationalism is a relatively new concept dating back a few hundred years. It led to two world wars last century. Choose a better label for your beliefs.

So you believe that nationalism is bad. What about it is bad?

My point is basically the same as goat’s: you’re using the wrong term. I get why you’re using it, you’re thinking my nation first, before all other nations. The problem is, nationalism as arose in the 1800s tended to aggregate power in the government and suppress individual rights. Basically the opposite of what you are talking about.

Edit: it seems nowadays there are two basic forms, civic and ethnic nationalism. You would probably despise civic nationalism and love ethnic nationalism.

De Gaul said, "Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first."

Orwell said it was, "identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognising no other duty than that of advancing its interests".

I find nationalism to be patriotism run amok. Going to a game to cheer on your favorite team is patriotism. Back in the day of soccer hooligans, going to a game to beat up fans of other teams is nationalism (the Raiders had that kind of fan in Oakland).

That's not nationalism. That's like saying that nationalism is bad because Hitler was a nationalist.

There's nothing inherently wrong with loving one's country, desiring self-rule, and putting the interests of the nation's people first instead of selling out to foreign interests.

There have been bad nationalists just like there have been good nationalists.

It's really difficult to have friendly discussion when you spew inflammatory rhetoric such as that.

That's not nationalism.

Does one's desire to take care of their family first mean that they hate their neighbor?

and recognising no other duty than that of advancing its interests".

Again, that's not nationalism.

A government's FIRST duty should be to its own citizens. Charity can be FREELY given by said citizens rather than at the end of a government barrel that seizes the fruits of the citizen's labor in order to give it to a foreigner. That is corruption and the American people have been victims of that at the hands of the corrupt Washington Establishment for decades.

We hate each other.  We see hate in culture, entertainment, congress, families, in the streets, and on this board.

We need more nationalism, not less of it.  Otherwise hate will flourish and we are finished.

Nationalism means loyalty, cohesion and respect for people and culture.  I’m a nationalist and practice nationalism.  I’m proud to say so.

Those who deride nationalists are the same who mock and ridicule others just cause they believe the wrong things.

@littlebitchbuckeye all of you words are patriotism. If patriotism and nationalism are exactly identical, why have both?
