Nice to read about IU landing some big fish in the transfer pool. But I’m not so naive to know these guys aren’t coming for the “ glory of old IU” or to obtain a business degree. IU is outbidding other schools. Does anybody know what IU is paying these guys?
Next year should be fun to watch. But it won’t be like watching IU in the old days where players and coaches had genuine affection for each other and the paycheck wasn’t involved. IU basketball won’t be great again no matter what the record. The rules have changed.
"great" is subjective and relative to the times. So yes IU could be "great" again. Would you say IU football is not great right now?Nice to read about IU landing some big fish in the transfer pool. I agree with what your getting at that though. It's the wild wild West, it's not sustainable and it feels so much different then back in the day. I think some common sense transfer rules would be the quickest and easiest way to solve some of the problems. Not all but some.
The best part of this bunch is they all have multiple years of eligibility. The churn we've been subjected to will be reduced substantially.
They could leave after a year, right? We have to bid again for their services. My understanding is these deals are year by year. Is it even possible to make a deal that lasts for the entire player eligibility? I don’t know.

Yes. But IU football had zero greatness previously.

Yes, they can absolutely transfer out next year, but they better produce or they're not getting the deals we are giving out.
We pay pretty well, better then 95% of the nation (I don't have exact numbers). We absolutely were the biggest number for the Alabama kid we just got.
College sports even five years ago will never return. This is our new reality. We can thank the NCAA for this one, ignoring the problem and kicking the can down the road until someone else stepped in.

All true. But at least now we have a shot at having some continuity.
IU basketball won’t be great again no matter what the record.

It's been fun to watch the portal thread on the hoops forum. Gives me some rays of hope in what has become a mostly apathetic outlook these days.
I will say the handful of miserable baby back bitchers over there make it difficult. They are the epitome of the idiom "You'd complain if you were hanged with a new rope".

No clue on if it is accurate but i thought someone said $4 million for Sherrell. I would bet Burton from ND was next most expensive. We definitely have to overpay because no one is coming just because of our awesome coaching staff in basketball.
We did the same thing for Woodson (brought in an all-star portal class) and it didn't amount to crap. What we will find out though with this expensive haul is how good DeVries is as a coach because there will be no valid excuses this time around.
We don’t know how much they’re getting. All we have are estimates which are probably wrong. People who don’t understand budgeting and spending think, “IU has (made up number) to spend so that’s how much we’re spending.” I often see words to that effect on the basketball board. If I managed our budget that way in my last job I would have been fired. It would be like if I had $10 million for a project and got three bids to do the job for less, than hired one and said, “I got $10 million so I’ll pay you 10 instead of the 8.5 you bid. It’s all good!” I guess I’d follow up with “I’ll take half of that 1.5 extra” if I was a crook. 😉Nice to read about IU landing some big fish in the transfer pool. Getting some good players in the portal is key. I think Dusty May is a good coach, but all five of his starters this year came via the portal this time last year. DeVries would be talked about the way May is now if IU is somehow playing in Detroit next April.
Cignetti and IU fball was a blast this year not at all because of the money involved but because of the human element the coach and the players created. But it won’t be like watching IU in the old days where players and coaches had genuine affection for each other and the paycheck wasn’t involved. Compensation for scholarship players has always been part of it, just the numbers have changed. It’s still some coaches and a bunch of young men. IU basketball will be a joy to watch again if they come together and achieve greatness.
the human element the coach and the players created.
That’s true. Mendoza and Cig put a first class human face on our team.
