I've read what he really said and what he meant is crystal clear. He wouldn't want a crew made up of people exactly like him who thought exactly like him because he wants different points of view so he could see problems from all angles and make the best and most informed decisions. He's absolutely right. @zeke4ahs yep, he is very specific. He doesn't say he does not want 7 Whites, nor 7 men, nor 7 fighter pilots. They are additive. So you could have 7 men, but a couple scientists, an engineer, and a poet, and it works.
This is the correct answer, but mechanical logic rarely appeals as much as emotional outrage. He didn't say no to 7 whites, he didn't say no to 7 guys, he didn't say no to 7 navy officers, he didn't so no to 7 test pilots. He said no to 7 people who fulfilled all of the above categories. But understanding what he said isn't sexy and doesn't bring in the donations or get the clicks.
